To add to Richard Hendrickson's excellent answer in the steam era linseed oil was used in paints and varnishes. In the mid '50s it began to be used in polyuretnanes. Spencer Kellog sold polyurethane ingredients under the trade names Spensol which is now sold by Reichhold.
