What you have experienced is typical when accessing the American Memory Site. I'm not sure of the intricacies of how their database works, but a called image appears to load to a temp file for display. The temp file is what times out after it has been open for a period of time. I believe the timout is load related, ie, sometimes it is within five minutes, other times it has held for about 25 minutes.

I browse that site a LOT, and the one thing I have learned, just to avoid losing an image that I stumbled on without actively searching for it, is to always open the image in a new window, leaving the call page (the page with the description and image format choices) open.

That page never appears to time out, and I can always retrieve the image. That is also the best page to provide a link to, for that very reason.
