Linseed Oil

Marshalltown, Ia had a Diamond Paint and Varnish plant, also known as
Diamond Products, Inc and later merged into Diamond Vogel Paints, served by the M&StL. This could have been one industry receiving the Linseed oil. There was also numerous small Paint, stain and varnish producers in other locations in Iowa, Vogel Paints in NW Iowa, Iowa Paint in Des Moines, Klinger Paints in Cedar Rapids, Witte Varnish in Burlington, Riley Bros Paint & Oil Co in Burlington, Phelan Resins in Burlington, Elaterite Paint Mfg Co in Des Moines. And we certainly cannot over look the large nation wide brands with manufacturing facilities in Illinois, ie Sherwin-Williams, Valspar, Glidden, Amoco Chemicals, another state served by the M&StL. And in Minnesota there was Minnesota Paints Inc., Pratt Lambert Inc. Twin City Varnish, Acme Wht Lead and Color Works, Allweather Paint Co., and more. This information has been gleamed from the Industry lists being compiled by the Op Sig group and available in the files of their yahoo groups list at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Ry-ops-industrialSIG/files/Industries/ There are over 18000 listings and growing. I just heard today that a database of over 200,000 industries is being assembled as volunteers continue imputing data from various RR shippers directories. We definitely need more tank cars.
