Re: Intermountain 8K Tank Car - Accuracy?

If you do choose to do the Dow car, Jerry Glow's DOWX decals are fantastic.  The
Dow 8K tank car pictured in Volume 3 of the Railway Prototype Cyclopedia was
built at the same time as the 10K cars for which Mr. Glow produced the decals.

Richard Hendrickson tipped me off that Dow listed the actual gallonage of each
car in the ORERs. The four DOWX cars represented in RPC Vol. 3 were renumbered
from 8350-8353 to 38308-38311 in 1940.

Guys,

Thanks for the help. I went ahead and ordered one from Yesterdyear tonight--an
8k gal kit. I plan on upgrading everything including he handrails with wire, so
I'll let you know how it goes. Will probably be a Shippers car, but I may do the
Dow car using Jerry Glow's new decal set.

Thanks again for the help!

John;

It has some shortcuts, like missing rivets on the u/f, and I seem to remember
it is missing the little jack pas under the side sill, but it looked pretty
good when I measured it against plans, and for volume and such. Can
certainly use air line, piping and brake detail upgrade to your standards. A
little lacking, but better than nothing. Certainly better than any plastic
other than P2K Type 21, and the also under-detailed Red Caboose post-war.

Brothers,

I have a project I'd like to complete using the Intermountain 8K tank car
model. Is this thing accurate? Are the major components correct enough to
justify putting in 6-10 hours of detailing effort? I seem to recall Ted
Culotta panned it at Cocoa a few years back, but I don't recall his major
complaints.
Thanks for the help--enjoy Naperville!
