STMFC Discussion Group,
The RP CYC Publishing Company is pleased to announce the imminent
release of RAILWAY PROTOTYPE CYCLOPEDIA, Volume 21, scheduled for
distribution in early November 2010. Volume 21 contains much useful
prototype information: 167 black & white and color photographs, 16
diagrams, and 6 tables for a total of 113 pages comprising two in-depth
articles on the following subjects:

U.S.R.A-design All-steel Box & Auto Cars by Pat Wider (93 pages). The
article covers the U.S.R.A. all-steel box car design of 1918 and the
ubiquitous box and automobile cars that were built in the post-World
War I era that loosely followed this design. Included are cars built
for the New York Central Lines (New York Central, Boston & Albany,
Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago & Saint Louis, Michigan Central, Peoria
& Eastern, and Pittsburgh & Lake Erie) as well as the similar cars
built for the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western, Reading, Central Railroad
of New Jersey, and Universal Portland Cement Company. Railroads that
received the latter’s cars second hand, Hannibal Connecting and
Northampton & Bath, are also covered. The design is represented by just
over 37,000 prototype cars with the New York Central System having
32,700 of them.

Armour Refrigerator Line’s Steel Reefers by Ed Hawkins (20 pages). The
article covers the 2,000 steel cars built by General American
Transportation Corp. and American Car & Foundry Co. circa late 1948 to
early 1949 owned by Armour Car Lines with ARLX reporting marks. The
cars came with unusual Depressed Panel Roofs, which are described and
illustrated. Also shown are other reefers leased by Armour beginning in
the 1950s with MARX, TRAX, and PCX reporting marks.
