I'm struck by the fact that no one has mentioned using a micrometer instead of a caliper. The caliper is certainly convenient, but I have always used a micrometer for everything under an inch. I bought a good Lufkin when I was doing machining in graduate school and it still serves me well. Of course it can't do inside measurements, as some calipers can,
