Re: Renumbering of Reading and ERIE freight cars

Larry,

The Erie Lackawanna Historical Society has reprinted a number of diagram
books for the ERIE and for the DL&W. You should visit the ELHS web site and
view the options in the "store."

I think the "re-numbering" you refer to is more a case of a good deal of new
equipment replacing older cars.

Based on past discussions on this site and in various photo books regarding
the Reading and ERIE railroads, it appears that both roads renumbered their
freight car fleets at some point prior to the 1950s, most likely during the
late 1930s. It is very difficult to track the series and dimensional info in
the ORERs for those freight cars built in the 1920s and early 1930s through
the 1940s without knowing what the new and old series were.

Can anyone identify when these freight car rebuilds and/or renumbering
periods occurred? Does anyone have diagram booklets for either of these
railroads, and if so would it be possible to obtain a copy. I would be happy
to pay the costs for such copies.

Does anyone know whether Allen Stanley, who was living in South Carolina
during the 1990 and early 2000, is still collecting copies of railroad
diagram books? Can anyone supply Allen's address?

Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Larry Sexton
