If you have not already done so, check out the PRR projects group an Yehaw (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PRRPro/) We did the H21 class a while ago and there are a number of photos there that might help plus discussion in the archives. Additionally, the Westerfield H21 kit has very nice brake rigging. This project was also covered in The Keystone Modeler, No 41, Dec 2006. On the H21a, the air line passes between the center sill channels, making it invisible. The brake rigging consists of 2 parallel rods between the two brake levers and below the center sill. These attach to a triangle sticking off of the brake lever. The brake lever on the B-end has a rod attaching to each end - one from the truck (brakes) and one from the brake cylinder. The lever on the A end only has one rod, the one attached to the trucks. Hope this helps Bruce Smith Auburn, AL

GREAT pointer, Rich. Thank you very much. If there is one thing about this hobby that amazes me it is the fact that though it is small compared to most other hobbies/activities (golf, fishing, photography, etc.) it has a number of participants who are passionate enough about it to invest money to offer accurate small detail parts largely out of a desire to have a particular item themselves and have it be correct! Southwest Scale Productions looks like it might be another example of this phenomenon'

The PRR also applied Crown trucks to Class H34d. AKA PS2 covered hoppers built in the PRR shops from kits supplied by Pullman Standard.

As an aside, many of you know the Amarillo Railroad Museum offered PFE
R40-25 reefers in a number of paint schemes awhile back. I once had a custom who returned his models because the cars did not have black hinges, even though the era for the paint scheme he bought didn't have black hinges. No amount of kind persuasion could convince him that the paint scheme was correct. Jerry Michels

Doug, Alls I know about tank cars is they're black tubes on wheels. So, like most of my modeling I pick features on the prototype I can transfer to the model in hopes of having it look somewhat like the real thing.

message came forth about the photo or what you did. I doubt many knew it was there. Your notes on the photo indicate removal of rivet lines in some locations and placement of rivet lines in other locations to better follow the prototype along with some other detail changes. Model manufacturers often paint the side door hooks Black, but I believe they were Orange.> Dick Harley Dick, a builder photo of R-40-10 PFE 42225 definitely shows black door hooks. A 1920's builder photo of R-40-13 PFE 35474 appears to show orange hooks, with a shadow as you described. So at least for a time in the 1930's, the hooks got black paint -- but this exhausts my PFE ice reefer builder photos collection. :-) Tim O'Connor

I'm sitting in the Portland airport, waiting for a flight home from the SPH&TS meet, and was reading Yahoo Groups. In addition to what Richard said, black was the paint used by PFE (and other railroads) on most metal parts, up thru the 1940s. Apparently it was the most rust resistant paint at that time. PFE started the practice before 1928 (where my own PFE paint scheme chart starts). Here's a summary of PFE's use of Black on metal parts for ice reefers: - End hardware was always Metalic or FC Red. - Flexible metal roofs and hatch parts changed from Black to FC Red (Metalic) in Jan. 1936. - Solid steel roofs (beginning in 1932) were never painted Black. - Side Hardware and corner steps changed from Black to Orange in Jan. 1949. Center steps and steel car side sill tabs were still Black. - Center steps and steel car side sill tabs changed from Black to Orange in June 1951. - Underframe and trucks remained Black until the end of PFE ownership. These were PFE painting standards shown on drawings for all ice reefers. Model manufacturers often paint the side door hooks Black, but I believe they were Orange. They look dark in photos due to shadows. I have not fully researched that. Hinges were oiled, and dirt did accumulate on the excess oil. So even after hinges were painted Orange, they often show a lot of dark dirt in photos. Hope this helps, Dick Harley Laguna Beach, CA
