Let it dry as long as you like as long as the solvent is gone. Days, weeks, it doesn’t matter; the stuff will grab itself. Plibond is fine. In fact I think it’s the same formulation as Walthers Goo. – Al Westerfield

Hi: I am building a westerfield gondola (finally). The insructions call for attaching the weight with contact cement and letting it sit for afew minutes to allow solvents to evaporate or they will eat the casting. The contact cements I have seen- Bare, pliobond etc. call for at least 10-15 min. or until tacky. I wondered which cement Al actually used or has anyone else used safely. Thanks. Marty Cooper

These were not available at the SFRH&MS convention. Martin had health issues
and was behind. He hopes to have them for Naperville.

I've been asked about the new Sunshine Sk-M/O and all I can say is
huh? I have no info about it.

Has the SFRH&MS convention occurred yet? If so was Sunshine there with
new kits? If anyone has flyers about the meet or about new kits would
you please scan them and send me a copy. I like to be up to date but
maybe this time I'm a little behind.

As a result of a death in the new owner’s family, the Westerfield booth will not be open at the NMRA Train Show. I’ll be at the convention a couple of days and hope to see many of you. – Al Westerfield

I have not, but I received my final order under Al's watch 4 weeks ago.  I was

List,
I am constructing a Speedwitch USRA Georgia rebuild kit (K127) and have misplaced my instructions. Would anyone with this kit be willing to scan the prototype/instruction sheets for me? If you have a set and are willing and able, please contact me off-list at jmay59@tampabay.rr.com .

Thank you in advance.

Hi Armand,

I'd say "pretty close" but I don't have the exact measurements in front of me to confirm that.

I do know the GLa is a better starting point (it's what I use for mine - see MRH ISsue #1) for one of these than the USRA twins that most people use. The USRA cars are obviously too large.

I neglected to mention the author (Steve Horsley)in my earlier post.

Thanks Steve, for your efforts on this piece.

I vote for the black door being "a nice touch for the photo" not representative of reality-- like the picture of me at age three, wearing a straw "Chinese coolie hat."
C&O, for example, seemed to have had more black boxcar doors in builders photos, than in real life.

To those who might be interested, there's an excellent, detailed article on the Central Vermont's 30000/20000-series twin hoppers in the latest issue of the Central Vermont Railway Historical Society Ambassador. Although the CV's boxcars are fairly well-documented, the hopper cars, some of which went through 3 or 4 rebuildings over the years, have not been covered as well in print. Well worth reading.

Also included are some roster shots dating from 1963 or so of a number of pieces of CV and StJ&LC M-of-W equipment from George Melvin.

I would lean strongly towards painting the doors the same color as the
sides. The specs refer to "standard freight car color" but without defining
a specific brand or color chip. I like a medium tuscan boxcar red and use a
50:50 mix of Modelflex Light and Dark Tuscan Oxide reds.

Gary,

You may want to take a look at the Freight Car Department portion of the
Illinois Railway Museum website as there is a restored Single Sheathed 50'
Double Door Auto Car with the black doors, black ends and mineral red sides.
Here is a link that works to bring the photo up:

I should think that the paint would be the same as that of the Sunshine RI
XM-1 kit. This appears to be a fresh mineral red. Perhaps Tony Thompson or
Richard Hendrickson could confirm this.
