Tom and Group,
The newest "Railway Prototype Cyclopedia" Volume 25 has 81 pages devoted to the A.A.R. 50 ton Standard Hopper and the similar "Van Sweringen Advisory Mechanical Committee Cars". Rosters, Photos, Histories, Drawings and more than what you ever wanted to know about 2 Bay Offset Hoppers. If you grew up in the same period i did "Everything You Wanted To Know, But Were Afraid To Ask About ___". Any who I think it's a very good deal for only $29.95. I just received mine in the mail this week. And if you really want to know more it's only the 7th in a series of articles about 2 bay offset hoppers. So you could collect more of them, if you wanted to! Is Maine Central northeast enough for you? They had 250 cars! I don't know if you think of Erie, Reading,and LNE as Northeastern Railroads but they had lots of these cars also. Canadian Pacific also had some of these cars. So you definitely could paint and letter some of these cars for Northeastern Railroads.

Hi Clark,

I too just built a couple of F&C kits that I bought at Naperville. I washed the assembled cars in warm water with Ivory liquid dish detergent. After letting them air dry I airbrushed them with Polly Scale paint. They've had overnight to dry and I expect to reassemble them (trucks, couplers, uncoupling levers) this morning. Then I'll give them an airbrush coat of Pledge with Future for a gloss finish to accept the decals.

I think the Atlas is probably a bit more robust, but the ME is much finer.

Also ME have self locking turnouts like Peco (the spring can be easily
removed if using stall motors).

Both brand are DCC friendly with an isolated frog that can be powered if you
want live frogs.



BTW, we are not touting for your business.

The freight from here would be a bit expensive (grin)

Prototype for the Atlas 2 bay offset side hopper?

I was looking at the new Atlas Trainman 2 bay offset side hopper and was wondering what roads these cars would be prototypical for. These cars look nice and I think with a minimum amount of work,such as wire grabs and ladders,would make a good model. I model northeastern coal haulers and would like to add a few of these cars if they are a fit. Thanks for any info.

I've done this on On3 models I've built... in O scale it's not difficult. Usually it's a 1x4 board that is held in place with a couple of cotter pins on the inside of the turnbuckle.

I believe that the board was placed in the turnbuckles was to keep them from turning or twisting on their own, I.E. to keep the tension in the truss rods as they, the turnbuckles, could/would twist & loosen on their own. You can see some prototype examples @ Durango on the Durango & Silverton , on the Cumbres & Toltec or in the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden, Co.. Just look @ the 3 foot gauge former D&RGW freight cars, they mostly have these boards in their turnbuckles. I have put some of these in on some of my GN Trussrod box cars. For HO scale this requires a rather small cross section of bass wood & the truss rods to be open in the center.

NADX reefers for "Milk White Eggs."

With the new lightrail line almost completed south of Salt Lake City to
Draper (19 miles), the community of Draper is preparing a historic railroad
display intended to highlight its poultry past.

"Draper was founded in 1849 by Scottish immigrant Ebenezer Howard. The town
was named Draperville after William Draper, who had moved here with Howard,
and was also the first LDS Elder in the area. The community later became
known as the Egg Basket of America and shipped milk white eggs all over
the country. Cooperation between Utah State University and Utah Poultry
Producers refined the White Leghorn chickens to begin production of white
eggs as early as 1910. By the 1920s, "milk white" eggs became a national
trend among the best big-city restaurants, as well as consumers who were
willing to pay more for the perfect egg from Utah. Draper Poultrymen were
also the first to send "next day" eggs by express rail (see model above) to
New York City which proved to be very profitable. The story of Draper and
its milk white eggs will be told at the historical rail car display to be
built at the Draper Town Center Park-and-Ride. Preliminary preparations
for the historic rail car exhibit are started. An actual refrigerated rail
car from the period is being transported from Kanab, Utah as the
centerpiece of the exhibit, which also will include a water tower with a
message welcoming people to Draperville."

The announcement included what looks like a standard Athearn 40-foot
HO-scale reefer, painted for North American Dispatch, NADX, with lettering
for Utah Poultry Producers Cooperative Association, and the slogan "Milk
White Eggs." Apparently, they found a reefer down in Kanab, Utah, 296 miles
to the south near the Utah-Arizona line, and will be restoring and painting
it to match the model.

I am a bit curious if this paint scheme will be accurate.

Re: H21 Hopper Cars: PRR and who else??!

During WWII according to the ORER the VGN leased I think around 100 H-21 hoppers, however the numbers weren't known and only a series was listed. Bowser produced the cars with the fantasy scheme that was drawn by John Teichmuller, however given wartime and the urgent need for cars, the only change to the cars would have been a paint over of the PRR reporting marks and VGN put in their place keeping the PRR number. Speculation has the cars coming down the Delmarva peninsula and transferring to the VGN at Norfolk.

It is interesting how the main wooden sills have splayed apart beyond the right bolster...
by the twisting force that pulled out the coupler (and at least one of its springs).

I was not in Naperville, but I attended the hands on 2 1/2 hour airbrush clinic at the NMRA convention in Grand Rapids and consider it to be the best investment of clinic time of any convention I have ever attended. I highly recommend it for any airbrush novices like me.
