Thanks for clearing things up, John. I was wondering why the latest bottle of my old favorite, Solvaset, didn't seem to be working as well as the bottle I bought in the 1960's. Didn't smell the same, either. Now I know why!

Caveats: NONE Tom; I did mine in green and orange lettering using Floquil Dark Green with drops of black added until it looked right. The ends on mine were Floquil Black. The colors worked well with the decals provided by Sunshine, leaving the lettering a dark orange. Elden Gatwood

George, 1. Yes. The majority ranged from 10'-4" to 10'-6" IH, but there was a large number (nearly 39,000) 10' AAR box cars built in the postwar period. SP/T&NO alone had 18,950 if I counted right. 2. No. Many postwar AAR 40'-6" box cars had 4/4 IDE but not nearly all. There were many thousands of box cars built from roughly July 1948 through the 1950s with "R+3/4" Improved Dreadnaught Ends or Carbuilder Ends (both offered by Branchline), and a significant percentage had 6' door openings. Diagonal panel roofs became prominent beginning in 1948 as there was a transition from the Murphy panel roof to diagonal panel. There were other variations of postwar 40'-6" box cars including cars with welded sides and other types of roofs such as the proprietary ACF Riveted Depressed Panel Roof. 3. Yes. You have choices. Northern Pacific had 2,000 40' box cars with 4/4 IDE built in 1945-1947 and 2,750 with R+3/4 IDE built in 1948-1953. The latter cars were all built by NP at Brainerd in 4 groups. The last 3 groups built in late-1949 to 1953 had diagonal panel roofs. The cars built in 1951 and 1953 came with straight side sills, which would require modification of the Branchline kit. Hope this helps. Regards, Ed Hawkins

Koppers was a wood chemical treating company and if I am not mistaken in your area they had a treating facility in Oroville, Ohio and may also have been an online shipper for the NKP. It might mention a type of treatment that Koppers provided but most were coal tar based, so a form of creosote could have been used but it seems to be highly unlikely as it would have the typical odor, but there were other treatments as well. AAR postwar boxcars
George Corral <g.corral@...>
Hi all,
Questions to the knowledgeable in the group: 1) Were most 40' AAR postwar boxcars 10'6" IH? 2) Would I be correct to say that all Branchline Blueprint series AAR 40' postwar boxcar kits with 6' doors (1400 series models) all came with 4/4 IDE ends and straight panel roofs? 3) If so, could I then use any of these kits to build a Northern Pacific 40' AAR postwar boxcar by re-lettered it with the correct decals. Yes? Thanks a bunch. George Corral La Grange, KY
