Forgot to say if I were modelling one of these cars in service, I'd just paint it Floquil BCR and weather from there. The photos show several subtly different shades of weathered paint.

For those of you arriving early to the St. Louis area for this weekend’s St. Louis RPM meet, we have two events happening on Thursday, Aug 1st. First, the Litchfield Train Group is having an open house for RPM attendees from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.The club has a large HO scale layout, 44' x 50’, Digitrax DCC, 90% scenicked, set in the 1960s Midwest (although models of all eras are run at times).The layout is located in the Ameriprise Financial building downtown at 510 N. State Street, Litchfield, Il. 62056.Litchfield is about 45 minutes from the Gateway Center in Collinsville, IL. If you have any questions please contact Lonnie Bathurst at (217) 556-0314. Second, we are hosting our annual, informal BBQ dinner at Bandana’s BBQ, located at 4 Commerce Drive, Collinsville, IL, right next to the Gateway Center. We have 30 seats reserved and the meal is pay-as-you-go.Arrival is at 6:00 p.m. and we can stay as long as we want to BS and harrass the waitresses--or get harrassed by the waitresses, as often happens... I recall that some Canadian meat products found their way into the US back then, fish being one that I recall. Perhaps Kosher product for New York City? I was told that the NYC had some Kosher traffic ex Chicago.

The CPR Lyndonville Sub. was 64 miles of former B&M from Newport to Wells River, VT, and an "odd duck" on the CPR system. These cars were a predecessor of the Canadian cylindrical covered hoppers still on the rails today, a large number being built and paid for by the Canadian government when CN and CP refused to invest in new cars to haul grain in the 1970's. The "Crow rate" of 1/2 cent CDN per ton mile for much Canadian grain traffic discouraged investment in new rolling stock for this traffic from the 1950's on.

regularly to all of the New England states. They were common in NYNH&H freight consists and were seen in and passing through New Haven (the city). I assume they traveled on to both New York and Maybrook to interchange with additional roads, but I haven't researched it to that extent. I haven't seen any evidence that the CP counterparts traveled New Haven rails. But it stands to reason that they must have, albeit less frequently than the CN cars. Since the eight-hatch reefers were used to carry so many specialized environment-sensitive commodities and not just goods requiring refrigeration, they must have traveled to all corners of the continent. bb

Most of the photos in Sweetland and Horsley, "Northern New England Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment", pp 9-15, suggest that the color is a mainstream BCR. I could be convinced that newly-painted cars had an Oxide tinge.

Well, I can answer that. My Dad (who worked for a lumber yard during the thirties) told me how they dealt with doors that were jammed because the load had shifted against them... They'd back a truck up to the door, perpendicular to the track, wedge the hooks of a couple chains behind the edges of the door, and hook the chains to the truck. Then they'd drive straight away from the car; when the slack ran out, the door popped off the side of the car. When they'd finished unloading, they'd throw the door into the empty car for the railroad to deal with.
