Alex, floor tubes were barely visible from the inside of the car.  They were basically steel tubes that extended down below the floor as containers for chains.  When the auto racks were in use, the chains could be pulled up out of the tubes.  When the racks were not in use, the chains disappear entirely into the tubes, leaving an uncluttered floor.  I’m sending you off-list a scan of a photo in which the floor tubes are visible extending below the underframe and side sills.

Does STMFC now allow attachments?

Anyway, that UTLX car is something else" "transformer oil" -- Can you say PCB's?? Oh my God,
talk about hazardous material. If that car derailed today they'd evacuate a 100 mile radius.

Clouser Boxcars (branching off the end doors thread)

Rod Miller

In the 70s Bill Clouser produced in O Scale boxcar bodies cast
in epoxy. I was fortunate to obtain both a 40 foot and 50 foot
double door with end door bodies, and now would like to know
what roads had them. My cars are the wood roof walk versions;
the bodies are 10' 6" IH.

In case you aren't familiar with these models, I've uploaded the
Clouser catalog/instruction sheets to Rod Millers Pics in the
Files section. Seeing the cars in person makes me pretty sympathetic
to the recent discussion that cast bodies look better than brass.
Consider that these cars were made almost 50 years ago. The last
page of the sheet (#4) has a catalog of his models at the bottom.

Note that on one of the ends WABASH 72?00? has been written
(page #3).

Sorry to ask such a broad question. Hopefully the historical
information in the sheets will compensate.

Very interesting. Are any photos of the interior of such cars available on line? I'm trying to figure out what "floor
tubes" look like.

This tabulation is referred to as AAR Bulletin No. 28. The heading of this bulleting indicates that it covers XAR and
XMR types, which apparently differ in that the former were not lined and were not suitable for general loading while the
latter were lines and suitable for general loading. However the table does not indicate which type applied to a
particular group of cars.

Most of the cars listed had auto racks, some had end doors, and a few had both.

If you look in the Official Railway Equipment Register there is an appendix of "Serial Numbers & Description of
Automobile Cars Equipped With Auto Racks" -- Now, this is not a complete list of all end-door equipped box cars, but
there is a column for "Width of End Doors" and scanning down that column you can tell which railroad box car number
series (with auto racks) had end doors.

In 1953 the list is ATSF, CP, CB&Q, CRI&P, ERIE, LV, NYC, SLSF, and SOU. I know this is definitely not a complete list,
because C&O, CN, IC, MKT, MP, NKP, SP, UP, WABASH and WP had end-door box cars too.

Re: putting groups on hold

Edward

Charles and all,

To change preferences for receiving Yahoo group messages, you need to be logged into Yahoo. Your groups should show up in a list at the left of the screen.

Open "Manage my Groups." Another full page list of your groups should appear. The right hand column shows the message preference you previously set for each group.

Click on the shown preference and a drop down list will open for selecting a different preference. Each group will need to be changed individually. But having them all in a list makes it a bit less onerous. Select your changes and be sure they are confirmed.

I've found that no emails works best for me. I open a bookmarked URL for my Yahoo groups (copied and saved after you get your group list to open).

No huge piles of messages coming in via email now.

Reading group 'Conversations'  (as they are now called) on site is a bit trickier than it was before. However such is the substance of 'progress' at times.

I have just been drooling over this car. It has been executed VERY nicely. I love the interior detailing, and the delicacy of the grabs and end details. Kudos to all that have contributed data and photos for IM to work with!

I have been seeing all the discussion going on, on the B&O list, on the ex-C&O cars that went to the B&O, but I was wondering if any of you know if IM intends on doing other variants, for other roads, that aren't on the current list?

I am especially interested in the later versions of the C&O, Erie, Montour (i.e., "MTR"), Shawmut, and P&WV cars. Did any of you send IM photos for those?

Elden,
I echo your comments about the new InterMountain A.M.C. (nee AAR Alternate Standard) hopper car models. In my view the models are exquisite and true to the prototype drawings from which they were derived. Thus far IM has released 16 models having 5 end variants.

After receiving some models on Saturday and taking a look at them, I applaud InterMountain's work and everyone involved in producing the models. The IM product designer did a fantastic job with a very high degree of attention to detail, and the Chinese producer has done an outstanding job executing the design with the tooling, injection molding, assembly, painting, lettering, and packaging. The overall workmanship is exceptional.

In answer to your question about other variants, announcements of any other variants or other lettering schemes must come directly from InterMountain. I know IM has a large number of builder's photos and in-service photos to use for future considerations.

Ed Hawkins

No.  Mitchells was still open when I left the Philly area and moved down to Florida.  I think they were selling off a lot of their stock by then and planning to close the store.

I built the end-door 40’ auto car (RI-1) a few years back.

From memory, my car arrived within about 2 months (including a flight across the Pond). I found Ron easy to deal with, prompt responses to emails and happy to sort international shipping for me.

Castings were crisp and accurate and went together well. It’s a flat kit, I think the only bit I was unsure of was the precise end door/sides alignment being unclear in the instructions, but quickly resolved by a look at the completed model on the RE website.

Decals were good, with decent photos/diagrams to show placement.

I’d put the kit on a par with the Sunshine flat kits I’ve built.

Alan Monk
