Re: HO Scale Freight Car Truck Document Update
The Intermountain roller bearing wheelsets function by locking the axle in place and allowing the wheels to roll independently. I think they were intended for brass passenger cars, which are notoriously heavy and often had horribly performing trucks. Such cars are not likely to need to negotiate every switch on your layout so the locked axles are less likely to cause problems especially since the passenger trucks are usually sprung and semi-equalized so they are not as rigid as 1-piece freight car trucks. You need a little up-and-down and side-to-side "play" in a truck so it can handle our imperfect track. Tim O'Connor
What are your thoughts on replacing the wheels in bras trucks with Intermountain's roller bearing wheel sets?Definitely a last resort, Spen, if there were no suitable plastic replacement trucks. And so far, I havent needed to do this, so I cant comment on how such a conversion would work out.

Re: Question for Steve Hile, or whoever answers : )
Armand,
A quick search of the archives reveals that the Athearn offset quad is perfect for a
number of pre-WWII hoppers, especially the B&M, B&O, C&O, DL&W, Erie, MEC, M-K-T, MP. This comes from a conversation we had about an "iron modeler" contest a few years back and in fact, Ted has given me the go ahead to use this project to restart the Virtual Modelers group. Regards

I have several builder photos of these M&StL cars but I'd love to see any photos of a -lettered- raised-roof car and especially I'd like to see the single-door version of the raised-roof cars. That's something I might like to model! :-) Tim O'Connor

Pullman Panel door (was)Superior six panel Superior door
Andy Carlson
Somewhere I have an RTV mold for a Pullman proprietory 6' wide door for a 10'6" IH boxcar. Bill Welch got a few of these doors over 12 years ago from me. I had then thought that Pullman doors were of a circa 1957 release, but Bill found a "Ya'all" user in 1953. The pattern was made by Wayne Madison, who took the industries' then (and still is in my opinion) best proportioned Pullman door, the Kurtz Craft 7' wide Pullman door to make the narrower version. Wayne also made an 8' version, as well. -Andy Carlson Ojai CA

Fenton,
Yes and that is why I am asking those who are interested to let me know in
a separate email marked "AFTER MARKRT" so we can get some kind of an idea of how
many are looking to do the project on the SAHKE N TAKE Yahoo Group. I have no
idea what the composite parts and decal will cost at this point.

Greg, has any thought been given to allowing those of us who may not make the list to purchase the parts and also build. I know I have done this in the past when I wasn't attending the Cocoa shows to catch up on old S 'n T projects. But it wasn't easy to track down parts and decals, after the fact. I would be glad to pay for the items if they were available.

Re: Superior six panel Superior door
Lester, that car is a PS-1 alright, but the door is NOT a Superior door. It is a Pullman Standard proprietary door and each panel is stamped with a slight outward bulge. MNS 1202-1302 were built in 1957 and the only correct models are made by Intermountain and Kadee. The McKean models has anachronistic details -- a pre-1950 roof is the most obvious. The AAR underframe is another. Tim O'Connor
The door I need is 6ft. wide and 10 Ft. tall to fit the McKean Models PS-1 kit I am working on ( purchased 1986 ) to save the paint and lettering as I do not have decals to redo. A photo of the door I am looking for is at: www.rrpicturearchivees.net/showPicture.aspx?id=400233. A door without placard would be best as I want to model it top mounted. I have reviewed the Kadee doors and they are not correct for the car I am doing unless I choose to change the numbers. I hope this is the clarification needed. Thank you and others for your time and effort to respond..

You can scratch build the doors out of styrene strips. I use 2X3 HO scale strips and keep the raised portions parallel with a card board cut with a paper cutter or a NWSL duplicutter. It takes me a few tries but the results are good.

"The autoloaders were defined as type 37+ which means they could

The "37" did indeed indicate that the auto
loaders were suitable for 1937 models. The "+" was applied to cars which
had additional facilities added for loading the 1937 Lincoln Zephyr.
This series of cars, as built, was fitted with Evans Type "C+"
loaders.
The "C+" loader was supplied to M&St.L and six
other roads only; AT&SF (250), CRI&P (350), GM&N (25),
N&S (25), L&A (25) , MK&T (100), and Frisco
(10).
After March 29, 1939 the door stencils would have been
changed to the simplified auto car lettering standards as specified
within Bulletin 28.
When the cars were shopped (and had the inside height
extended) they were refitted with Evans Type "E" loaders. The Type "E"
loaders remained within this series of ten cars until removed in May of
1952.

The photos have been posted to the MSTL yahoo list. And the article by Clark on modeling the cars can be found at http://www.cnwhs.org/modeling.htm scroll down to Vol 1 Issue 1. His article includes the builder’s photo.

The Missouri Pacific owned some similar cars and at least a few were converted into covered hoppers. Photos of MP1931 and MP1940 appear at . If I recall correctly, Joe Collias also has at least one close-up photo of these cars. When modeling in HO, I considered building roofs and converting the Athearn model. It would certainly be a neat project. Kind regards, Rob Adams Wellman, IA
