I think that may have been part of the set I gave Bob K for the IRM website. If not I got identical shots,in higher resalution. The lettering on the other side was just about gone. Anyhow, what was the box under the door in the linked photo?

This is the lettering scheme I was thinking about, but on a rebuilt (in 1960, apparently) car in the 205xx series.  The car at IRM can be seen at

Later on, some railroads developed a more robust method of uncovering
errors, and gave freight cars "check digits" -- in which the last digit
of the car number was based on a computation of the first 4 or 5 digits.
This was much more likely to reveal transcribing errors. KCS used this
method although I don't know when they first implemented it.

The GN used even numbers for several orders of F units!

Some computers use 13 bits to represent an "8 bit" chunk called a "byte".
This not only detects all possible errors, but can actually auto-correct
any single bit error. You might want to think about that next time you're
looking to replace your PC... if anyone still has a PC! (I may be the last.)
Many electronic devices sold have "parity" checks which can only detect a
single bit error -- and many have no error detection at all. (Even though
the likelihood of errors has increased exponentially over time!)

Scott, this keeps coming up on the list and, since no one else has responded to your query, I�ll answer it yet again.

This numbering system was practiced on a number of (mostly midwestern) RRs - e.g., C&NW, M&StL, Soo,CGW - and acted as an error checking device in the days when paperwork was actually on paper and was entered by human (and therefore fallible) car clerks.  Typically, box cars had even numbers, open top cars odd numbers, and if a number didn�t correspond with the car type, it was obviously wrong.

Hello Ed,

I made a jig to hold the C&BT roof for a lengthwise cut with a razor saw, then used an NWSL True Sander to sand half the excess width from each roof section. After cementing the roof back together, I used a chisel blade to scrape the ledge under the eaves to a more realistic height. All of this really improved the car's proportions, and the running board hid the seam at the peak of the roof. But after I'd done two or three cars this way, I learned that the InterMountain car was coming and stopped building the C&BT kits. (Anybody want to buy some? I'll make you a good price!)

It occurs to me now that since InterMountain sells parts, you could buy its roofs to put on C&BT carbodies. But I think I'll stick to the IM kits and r-t-r cars.

I seem to recall seeing drawings for these mid to late 50’s era insulated boxcars, one of which still exists in sad shape at the Illinois Railway Museum.  I thought that it was in MM, but a search in the MR index comes up empty.

for them. I can't recall ever seeing a drawing of either car. Perhaps Abacus (the stillborn resin

Tony’s approach – (which, if I follow correctly, describes the inset and protruding corrugations in relation to the end panel, rather than describing the end panels themselves) – makes sense to me. 
 
The corrugations may go inward, outward or a bit of both.  But all the while, the edges of the ends (which wrap over the car sides) always go one way.   It makes sense to me to determine the plane on which the corrugations lay by the edges of the end panels (i.e. where they bend to attach to the car sides).  To “reverse” such an end would defeat the designed attachment of the end to the car sides.  
 
That said, I generally understand what is meant if we refer to a reverse Murphy end.

In many situations, "inverse" means "turned upside down," top to bottom, which is not what we mean with freight car ends. We can understand "reverse" as rotated 180 degrees, and that is how I would describe an end, whether corrugated or Dreadnaught, which has its major  corrugations inward to the car instead of outward. "Inverse" could be taken to mean the same thing, thus the risk of confusion.
         My own usage is to call the ends with outward-facing corrugations, but set inward to the plane of the end, "recessed" or "inset." This avoids the confusion between reverse and inverse. I try not to use "inverse" at all for car ends.
         But as Tim wisely says, YMMV.
