IM ACF Sherwin Williams Covered Hoppers
I’m trying to get some modeling down while off on the holidays. I have an IM Sherwin Williams 1958 CF Covered Hopper. I’ve made the required updates but I am at a lose to how I should weather the car. What did these carry? RPC 27 isn’t much help since most photos are builders photos.

UP Kitbash 40' Double Door SERVICE Help
JoelDee
UP Challenger Merchandise Service UP Two-tone Grey Express Service UP Armour Yellow Express Service
On the Athearn site all these boxcars were offered in 2005-8 and are here: Athearn page covering the UP express boxcars released between 2005 and 2008and here: http://www.athearn.com/Search/Default.aspx?SearchTerm=40%27+Box+RTR+Double&CatID=THRF&RN=UP. All shown are double door 40' boxcars
I also read that the 40' double door boxcars Athearn used were a hold over from their purchase of Model Die Casting and it looks as if similar boxcars, under numerous Flags were produced by Roundhouse and may be during the same time period and from the same production mold as well.
Although the paint schemes may (or may not?) be correct for all the boxcars Athearn used to create double door sales, I need some direction to clarify how the UP Service boxcars were specifically painted and how the exterior structure should be created in an accurate model.
I would appreciate all input and direction, especially from individuals who have modeled these particular boxcars, or modeled the 40s-50s double door boxcar on which it looks to be based.
I hope you can help, Joeldee/Berlin

Thanks Ben, I'll do some digging and see what I can find on the numbering. The photo is really neat, what an unusual car and the roof extension. That may make a good project. Fenton Wells

Re: Rutland RR Box Car red

Hi Phillip,

Thanks for your reply. I do have that issue of the Newsliner. It was one of the 66 back issues of the Newsliner that I obtained very recently, but with that quantity I haven't been able to through them all yet in detail. When I got it out and read the article, itf was very helpful regarding prototype info, but didn't cover the model paints. Since it mentioned in the article it was part one, I did a search and found part two in the Summer 1997(Vol 9, No 2) issue. Since these articles were published in 1996/1997, a lot has changed in the model paints available. I read in these articles (and elsewhere) that the Rutland used to source its paint supply contracts through the NYC up until around 1950. So, I think the best choice is the follow the Rutland practice and use the shade of box car red as used on the NYC in this period. By chance, after I sent my question, I saw that Tru-Color Paint is now offering a shade of box car red they describe as NYC 1945-50's Freight Car Red (stock # 221). I've sent them an email requesting a pdf copy of their colour chart, so it'll be interesting to see how this compares to colour photos of the Rutland's box cars. I have ordered quite a few of the Westerfield Rutland 8000 & 9000 series box car kits, so if the Tru-Color paint looks good, it will save having to mix other paints to get a suitable match to paint these models. If Bill has his power point presentation from the convention, I would certainly like to see it. It would be interesting to see what he has learned since his article in the 1990's. Anyone can visit the NPRHA company store and make purchases. Members get a discount. Just google NPRHA, go to the website, and click on "Company Store" then follow the links. There currently are only two freight cars available, plus the stock car ends. There are also numerous laser kit buildings and a fabulous set of color drift cards that were carefully researched for accuracy against known paint chips. There are also other modeler's resources on the site. Chuck Soule

The patterns for the resin NP stock car were done by Aaron Gjermundson I am guessing 7-8 years ago. I purchased mine directly from him, but I do not remember how I learned about, probably the "Resinators Underground Railroad" (tongue planted firmly in cheek). It was my first stock car build and it literally almost put itself together--beautifully mastered, engineered and cast--a gorgeous model. Bill Welch

When you say that a kit is “under the radar”, is it even available for sale to non-members? If so, how does the society (or association, in the case of the NP) promote it?
The target market for a historical society’s cars can be much broader than its membership. I have to salute the New York Central System Historical Society in this regard. Although members do receive a discount, the cars are readily available to non-members, and this certainly makes it easier to develop sufficient orders to reach the break-even point. Although the Society can’t afford a lot of advertising in MR or RMC, I understand they are trying to advertise new items in the NMRA Bulletin.

Along with the discussion of the Central Valley Northern Pacific stock car it should be noted that the Northern Pacific Historical Society also produced a resin stock car kit for the NP 83750 - 83999 truss rod stock car. This is an excellent kit and is the "proper width".
Along the same lines the Union Pacific society has a kit for a double deck Harriman stock car.
Neither of these cars had much publicity. We should note that there are some excellent kits out there that are under the radar.

Regarding the NYC cars in your list, many of them were USRA steel cars renumbered and/or rebuilt and shown in the roster starting p. 90 RP CYC Volume 21. Any photos that we could find were published in that article. Anyway, I hope this helps. Regards, Ed Hawkins

Re: L&N 40' box car question.
Steven D Johnson
Eric,
I don’t know if you need photos of any of the L&N Mt. Vernon-built cars being discussed, but the L&N Collection, University of Louisville Archives has 8 X 10 black and white photos of these:
No. 16626 – builder’s photo, ¾ view, printing at the bottom reads “50 Ton Steel Sheathed Box Cars, Mt. Vernon Car Manufacturing Division, Pressed Steel Car Company, Inc., Negative No. M-283 Job No. 10558”
No. 16576 – an L&N photo (3/4 view) showing the car in the “Friendship Train” paint scheme. I’d love to see a color photo of this car, and have an HO model of it!
I can scan the photocopies I have. You can also order high-res scans from UofL.

So, L&N ordered 400 box cars each from Mt. Vernon and ACF in 7-45. The ACF lot was 2888. The MtV order would have been 150000-15399, but was cancelled. Then in 12-45, L&N ordered another 400 cars from ACF, lot 2950, which were delivered as 15000-15399. Nevertheless, L&N placed another order with MtV/PSC in 7-46 for 1000 cars. which became L&N 15800-16799.

Re: NP Stock Cars represented by Central Valley kit
Builder's photographs show the 1930 built stock cars with trucks that match Tahoe #102/202.
http://www.sunshinekits.com/sunimages/tahoe/FLYER102withusers.pdf The 1936 cars as built had trucks with a really wide spring spacing similar to Tahoe #108/208.
http://www.sunshinekits.com/sunimages/tahoe/FLYER108withusers.pdf There is a picture on the back cover of an Mainstreeter, with of a car getting trucks switch out, and it was getting T-section Bettendorf type. I can share more information off list if anyone is interested. Aaron
