UP Two-tone Grey Express Service
UP Armour Yellow Express Service
On the Athearn site all these boxcars were offered in 2005-8 and are here: Athearn page covering the UP express boxcars released between 2005 and 2008and here: http://www.athearn.com/Search/Default.aspx?SearchTerm=40%27+Box+RTR+Double&CatID=THRF&RN=UP. All shown are double door 40' boxcars
I also read that the 40' double door boxcars Athearn used were a hold over from their purchase of Model Die Casting and it looks as if similar boxcars, under numerous Flags were produced by Roundhouse and may be during the same time period and from the same production mold as well.
Although the paint schemes may (or may not?) be correct for all the boxcars Athearn used to create double door sales, I need some direction to clarify how the UP Service boxcars were specifically painted and how the exterior structure should be created in an accurate model.
I would appreciate all input and direction, especially from individuals who have modeled these particular boxcars, or modeled the 40s-50s double door boxcar on which it looks to be based.
I hope you can help,
Joeldee/Berlin

Re: historical maps
Dan, the atlas works fine with Firefox. The maps do have some animation, so you may need an addon or plugin to get them to function.

Cool! for those that don't recognize the design,
this is the PSC side sill less version of their more familiar design. Both
designs are very similar except for the side sill. Since there is little
difference in light weight between the two, it is likely the plate is
thicker of the sill less version. So, no side sill, no side plate. The side
panels are simply bent to add a flange at the top and at the
bottom.

Mt. Vernon 1920s orders
Eric Neubauer <eaneubauer@...>
Can anyone help untangle these orders? These were
the days when railroads liked to spread their orders around.
Southern 165000-166269 and 305000-305799 (XM)
include 570 cars built by Mt. Vernon and 1500 built by ACF. They were ordered in
about 3-23. Perhaps some one knows which were built by ACF (lot 9578) and the
Mt. Vernon cars can be determined by process of elimination.
Southern 162000-164999 (XM) includes 1000 by
Mt. Vernon and 2000 by ACF. They were ordered in about10-24. The ACF lot is
9881.
ART 17750-18949 (RS) include 750 by Mt. Vernon and
450 by General Ameican ordered about 9-24.
IC 217750-218749 (GS) include 500 each by Mt.
Vernon and Ryan ordered in about 9-24.
IC 205200-205699, 207200-208199 (GS) include 3
orders of 500 cars each built by WSC&F, Bettendorf, and Mt. Vernon. They
were ordered about 7-22.
Then there are two that need
confirmation:
M&O 24595-24844? (XM) ordered from Mt.
Vernon in 12-27.
C&EI 94000-94499? (GS) ordered from Mt. Vernon
in 10-29.
Any help would be appreciated,
Eric

Adding Tahoe brake gear to other trucks
Andy Carlson
Hello, I have many Tahoe Model Works brake shoes/rigging pieces from the Tahoe 5'6" wb 50-ton trucks. Our own Dan Smith has been experimenting by retro-fitting TMW brake shoes to various other brands of trucks. Almost any one-piece truck can be modified to accept these brakes. Involves mostly trimming bolsters to fit the brake parts, snapping on the brakes after removing the "devils horns" (what I call the molded on brake shoes found on most trucks). Offered at $1/pair (enough for one freight car), plus shipping of $0.75/order. I accept checks and money orders. Contact me off-list if interested. Thanks, -Andy Carlson Ojai Ca

Re: NP Stock Cars represented by Central Valley kit
leakinmywaders
Hi all, the Gjermundson-mastered kit for the Whipple Car Co. 1913 NP stock car was stocked and available to anyone by mail order at the NPRHA Company Store at www.nprha.org for a year or two. (See http://www.steamerafreightcars.com/modeling/new%20products/gjermundson/npstockmain.html for further information on the kit and prototype). Like many high-quality resin kits, the production run was limited, the kit sold out, and it is not presently available. However a package of four prototype-width cast resin ends useful for those who want to modify the NP Central Valley styrene stock car kits to correct scale width (8ft 9in over the side sills, e.g., see http://research.nprha.org/NP%20Stock%20Cars/Stock%20Cars%2040%20Ft.%2082500-82749.jpg) has been re-stocked, and is available at the NPRHA Company Store at $12.50 for a package of four (plus shipping). Bill,
I, and I'm sure the others, appreciate your comments. I understand that the visiting hours in the asylum are somewhat limited so I won't be able to thank you in person. Mike Brock In case it should somehow be forgotten, I wanted to extend my thanks and gratitude to the principle people involved in the upcoming Prototype Rails that year in year out graciously give some of their valuable time to organize this annual event that so many of us have come to love and enjoy participating in. In naming the four I know of I acknowledge I am leaving some out and ask that my appreciation be extended by those whose names I know. Thank you Marty, Scott, Jeff and Mike! Bill Welch

Thanks Ben, I'll do some digging and see what I can find on the numbering. The photo is really neat, what an unusual car and the roof extension. That may make a good project. Fenton Wells
