I received my 3 undec. IM hopper kits from Andy Carlson Saturday. Here is quick review of what you get in the box. There are pre-blackened metal centersill and large one piece casting of the slope sheets, hopper bays, etc that serve to provide plenty of weight. These two parts fit together perfectly. The tooling on the many styrene parts IMO is on par with that from companies like Tamiya and Hasegawa for those familiar with aircraft, etc styrene kits. ALL of the end variations and hopper door locks and details associated with these two areas of the cars are included. In my quick look I saw brake step variations as well. Metal grabs are included.

The sill steps are cast onto the sides. I will cut these off and send them to "Yarmouth" in hopes Pierre Oliver and Peter Aue will use them to work their magic to provide us with photo etched replacements. I plan to build mine for the Clinchfield using Curt Fortenbury's very accurate decals that include variations for the "Clinchfield" stenciling.

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful! Get them while you can.

Since the first of the year I have been trying to bring more order and

and that made efficient use of space. I would also like something I can just
purchase. I am curious if people on this list have found a solution? Thank
you! Bill Welch
In the past the paint manufacturers offered racks for
hobby shop display of their paint products. You might
be able to find such racks from hobby distributors who
carry paints or directly from the manufacturers.

FYI, this topic was discussed some time ago, 2008, beginning with this message, if the Yahoo search worked correctly, message #: 74352; Subject: Lima NYC/NISX stock car model.

The conclusion remain basically the same.

Neat work.  Suggestion to simplify though, use three pieces for the floor with symmetrical doors, one the width of the doors and interior width pieces to extend on either side.  For staggered door cars,  five pieces with the section to each side of the car, the center door, and the extensions.  The seams are not critical as they are on board divisions.  This multi piece method eliminates waste and simplifies cutting as you have no complicated insets.

I've seen white or whitewashed interiors with black stenciling and load limit lines inside wood lined C&O box cars and ventilated box cars.

Fellas,

Some of you paint your boxcar interiors; I would be grateful for your preferred colors to replicate both a wood braced car and a steel boxcar.    I am hoping to avoid a color that is too dark.

Thanks,

Re: Roof coating / paint

John Sykes III

I guess I'll let my secret out.

For about the last 2 years I have been using WalMart's Fast Dry Spray Paint Flat Black (in a blue spray can) for underframes and roofs (when indicated).  It comes out a very, very dark gray and if you are lucky (and spray it too thick on a very hot day outdoors) it alligators and ends up looking exactly like a weathered roof cement. The alligatoring is not too predictable, but seems to happen mainly when you spray it on too thick over some other paint.  Spray it light, and you get a really good roof cement or underframe cement color without the alligatoring.

Don't worry too much if it seems a little too thick at first, it shrinks like crazy, which is what causes the alligatoring when applied too thick.

The can says it is an enamel, but it behaves more like a lacquer IMHO.

I dilute that color with yellow and a splash of red, because it seems
too 'tan' to me. Then I airbrush a whole sheet of .020 scribed evergreen,
and cut it up as needed for interior walls.

Also I've painted the underside of car roofs a galvanized metal color.

I only add interiors on cars I model with open doors, or brass cars
that have doors that open and close.

Thank you to everyone that responded. I went to the Micromark site--I should have thought of that!--and like the 4-tier rack Pat suggested.
