New York Central Boxcar decals
Does anyone make the 1930's through 1950's era decals for NYC boxcars? The best I could find is the Westerfield sets, but they are not very crisp. Is there someone else that makes these? It must be me not knowing where to look as the PRR guys have great decals,
Thanks in advance, Fenton Wells

Red Caboose PFE 30-9-12 kit to kitbash as an MDT Type 4 Reefer?
Bill Welch
I am curious if anyone has used the Red Caboose PFE 30-9-12 kit to kitbash as an MDT Type 4 Reefer? I know a fishbelly u/f is necessary but I am wondering if anyone in the group has used the RC kit as a point of departure.

I sent a follow up but haven't seen it. The cars were converted from LV quad hoppers in 1959-1960ish new entry in 1959 ORER.

Bruce,
The note about "Scranton 1948-10-15" refers to the next image down the list not the one in the provided link. Can you read the re-weigh date? There is no listing for these cars in the October 1955 ORER so the "FC" flats appeared after that date. Bob Witt

Re: Interesting Phoebe Piggyback on a LV half gon
Don, Folks,
While a quick glance might seem to indicate that the build date is 12/70, a closer look shows that the build date is in fact 12/20 or 12/30 (I favor the former) and that the stencil has been partially obscured, probably due to Mike Brock weathering it.
The purported date of the photo is October 15, 1948, location Scranton PA. I'm not certain about that date as I do not know if trailers of this size were in use at that time and the fifth wheel hitch is an issue, but the chaining of the trailer behind does
indicate that this is probably early 1950s at the latest. The reweigh on the car is also obscured or that might shed additional light on the question

As others have said, I too use the Hi Tech hoses. I've had Kadee hoses break the first time I put a finished car on the tracks.

I agree it is a very interesting flat car, but something is not right with the stenciled built date of "12-70".
The October 1959 ORER has a listing for a series of Lehigh Valley 40-ft flat cars with AAR class "FC", 11000 to 11049, with 37 cars on the roster. Does any one have a diagram book for the LV to verify the built dates?

Southern Black vs. FCR Paint
Garth Groff <sarahsan@...>
Friends,
Can anyone give me an idea when the Southern shifted from black to red paint for their open-topped cars? I have a few photos of Southern flats and gons painted FCR, but in MOW service circa 1980. I'm interested in something reasonably correct for the early 1950s, preferably 40' or 46' IL. Thanks much for any help. Garth Groff

SP GS modeling
John Barry
I came across a scene that I just have to recreate, as it occurred at the sand house that I'm modelling in Richmond, CA. Three different photos of SP drop bottom gons on the supply pile. Where did the sand come from and how to model it are the two questions that come to mind. Why is the third. I recall something that I think Tony T posted on his blog about a sand source near Watsonville on the coast. That could make sense as you want good clean sand for your locos and sources in the central valley not so much. But I'd like to confirm that. Two, thanks to the SP info on Railgoat's site I was able to come up with several candidate car numbers. I'm very confident that the partial number I saw in one photo, 2459, is actually 92459, a G-50-11. The other number looks like X 3/5 0/6
19 which could fall into the , 92900-93899 G-50-12 (93619, 93019), or the 94500-95199 (95019) series. Despite NEO, I managed to find some info on the SP GS gondolas and so far I've learned that Detail Associates made a kit that would build the -15 and Ulrich had a cast metal kit that could do the -11/12. What did I miss? 53120-53729 G-50-2 (53619) would be a possibility, but they were tight bottom cars and the photos show drop bottoms. I read, but failed to write down the type of end to use for -15 as DA had an option that distinguished it from the other kit that could only make later series cars. Is there a better option, short of brass that is available for the 11-12 cars? Do any of you have an Ulrich car you would like to sell? Writing this brought up a fourth question related to 1&3, did SP ship sand to other ATSF points? If so, how was it routed? I can't see SP short hauling itself and expect that they routed the car SP Richmond ATSF delivery. I suppose Santa Fe could have ordered the cars for SF delivery and not told SP about the extra distance, but I don't think that would have been kosher. Besides, someone surely would have seen sand gons on the car floats and snapped a photo, so I don't think that was the routing. But I could see Fresno and
Bakersfield getting their sand from Watsonville too. This I just have to get to the bottom of. All of this is a long way to say that if you model Santa Fe Loco service in NorCal, you need to model SP.
