Richard,

Thanks for the general link.  The finding aid indicates several additional off line loaded freight cars and a series of photos of "Loading crane broken through dock of Pittsburg, Calif. Santa Fe R.R. crane leased for recovery."  I wonder if they show the idler flat/boom car?

Redwood, with its natural resistance to deterioration, was often used
for underground pipe in the Far West.

Richard,

9281 is a DS Auto car with four fishbelly underframe sections.  The photo dates from prior to conversion to all steel in the mid to late 30s.  Nice in service shot.

Hi Ed and Group,

A number of years ago, I pulled down of a web site an image of SLSF 85954, a USRA composite gondola, loaded with what appears to be cast iron pipe of about — guessing here — 18-feet in length. There are partial images of similar cars coupled to both ends of this car also loaded with cast iron pipe. The date of the photo is given as 1958, which could be considered as a fairly late date for a USRA car to be in service. My plan is to model this car and load. 

I doubt that anyone would walk away carrying one of these lengths of pipe.

You could even apply a rank order correlation test to the actual and observed values to show that they match statistically, although the evidence was fairly clear. I'll have to go through your other posts. Interesting stuff!

I was able to access and read your uploads just fine.  I had to zoom in and out (on my computer if I hold down the CTRL key and then roll the wheel on my mouse, I can zoom in and out).  Thank you for calling attention to them!

Soil pipe versus sewer or water pipe

Hi all,
The pipe that Shapeways produced is commonly called soil pipe and is used primarily in building construction. Normally cast iron or ductile iron pipe has a shorter and more tapered bell. The comment that these two varieties of pipe come in 18' sticks is correct. A fitted gasket for the cast or ductile pipe is inserted into a groove in the bell, and the spigot end of the next joint of pipe is slipped in, creating a water tight seal. Before rubber gaskets fiber and lead joints were used.

Bill, I have two photos of WofA 11017 reweighed in ’56.  One is a broadside (possibly the one in Bob’s book); the other is a 7/8 view showing the B end.  It’s a bit fuzzy, but it you want it I’ll see what I can do with it in Photoshop.  It shows that the car had, by that time, been retrofitted with a Miner poweer handbrake.

The Southern shipped tons of cast iron and later ductile iron pipe from the
southeast, Alabama, Mississippi, North Carolina and other states were the
cast iron pipe foundries were. Alabama Pipe, Glamorgan (sp?), US Pipe were
a few of many. The pipe joints were mechanical, flanged and later a bell
joint pipe, with a forced fitting and a butyl compression ring..
Here is a cover of the Southern Railway employee magazine from the early
1960's showing mechanical joint pipe being loaded into a rebuilt gon.

Another day, another project …


I’m detailing an Accurail USRA twin hopper as a Western of Alabama car, series 11000-11044.  (They were “clones” built in 1923, not USRA originals.) I’ve seen the broadside photo in Bob Karig’s hopper book, so now I’m interested in the details on the B end: brake wheel, hand brake, brake step, cut lever, retainer valve. Can anyone direct me to a photo showing the B end, or a diagram book?


As a fallback, the other Georgia Group roads had hoppers with the same dimensions: Atlanta & West Point 31000-31054, Georgia Railroad 21000-21049. I suspect the three roads may have split an order, and A&WP 31100-31124 were very similar. Photos of these series may serve.
