The drawing on page 12 of Jay Miller's excellent Helium car clinic handout;
"A Portfolio of Helium Tank Cars 1926 - 1962"
seems to show a tube diameter of 18.5in for USNX 1054.

I'm not sure if it is safe to extrapolate this to other cars...

I think you have to remember that there are differing grades of crude oil.  The Canadian oil train disaster happened in part because the shipper didn't let the railroads know that the North Dakota crude is different in nature from most heavier crude oils.  Among other things there is more methane in it, along with some other readily flammable chemicals (can't remember the names) that make it much more volatile than normal crude oil.

I may easily be mistaken but I don't recall seeing mention of crude oil tank cars blowing up in prior years the way the current Brakken oil does.

Hi Folks,

 

               Does anyone recognize the trailer/flat combination (owner, roadname, dimensions, etc).  In this 1957 photo:

               My friend Mark Amfahr would like to try to model it in HO scale.  He says that this is the earliest evidence he’s found of TOFC moving across Nebraska.  UP did have regular TOFC operating many years before this (1953) but those services were limited to specific lanes for company-sponsored LCL traffic (LA-LV/SLC, for example), as opposed to the Overland Route shipment shown in the photo which appears to be non-UP equipment & traffic, possibly from a freight forwarder.

According to the Santa Fe Box Car book:

 

200 cars in BX28 class, converted 1937. Originally painted in the pre-map lettering scheme - no map, no slogan. The last BX-28 was retired around 1971. Photo of one fresh from the shop shown on page 115 of the book.

 

Maps and slogans began 1940 and ran through 1947 when "Ship and Travel" came along. The curved line maps came first, followed by an early straight line map, followed by the second straight line map which was the primary standard. Go with the latter.  "The BX-26 - BX-31 classes, which were originally lettered in the pre-map lettering scheme, apparently received slogan assignments in a random fashion as they were recaptured for normal repairs."

 

"In 1943 the Santa Fe dropped the periods from the reporting marks on the sides and ends of new and repainted cars."

 

Slogans: Grand Canyoun Line, Scout, El Capitan, Chief or Super Chief on the left side of the car. Maps on the right side.

 

If you only need one set of decals for all, go with the last straight line map and no periods in the reporting marks: 1944-47 paint scheme.

Southwest Scale Productions part numbers. The 10'6" and 10'0" dimensions refer to the
inside height of the box cars. The doors themselves are shorter than the IH number.

Bill. I'm at work and on my phone but Ed Hawkins nice freight car lists on the website did indicate door types. I recall 1937 AAR, modified 1937 AAR, postwar 10 6 cars etc. these are the same tables that were in his articles in Model Railroading, and RMJ. Probably also has similar in the RPCs.

A few months ago Andy Carlson offered the very nice door offered by Southwest Models and I ordered everything except the unique SP door as I had already built a model with that door. I ordered the door because I did not have any and because things goes out of production and I wanted to make sure I had at least one of everything "just in case."


I was looking at them today and wondered if there is a database that identifies which groups of cars each type of door was applied to. I did check the Steam Era Freight Car website but did not see anything but could have missed it.


Is there a spread sheet somewhere that provides some guidance as to when to use these very fine doors?
