I noticed that the "eastern" (PRR, C&O, B&O L&N) cars and midwestern (MKT, CB&Q) cars out number the home road box cars (exclusive of the long string of PFE cars), and that composite side box cars are pretty scarce (I count one CB&Q car). Also brand new paint jobs &/or brightly colored cars are about in equaly small proportion (not a scientific survey of course).

PFE Icing Platform drawings
Dave Nelson
I need to made a cad model of the PFE Icing Platform in Sacramento (1100 feet long) and would like to work from some dimensional drawings if possible. I know each platform was a custom job so I’ve no expectation of any “master plans” out there that are good for all but I would like the model to have the right general look. I’ve checked my own “library” and found a useful cross section diagram in Tony’s PFE book but I’ve not yet found a dimensioned drawing for the longitudinal dimension.
Anyone know where I might find a good drawing for the long run of the platform?

an old Rock Island flat car
I uploaded a photo I took of what I think is RI 92103, listed
as one of 3 43 foot flat cars in this series in 1955. I zoomed in and also loaded a scan that shows the truck in more detail, which I think is a USRA style Andrews truck. The scans are made from a photo print so the quality is only so-so. I took the pictures in July 1992 in Grafton Massachusetts, where the Grafton & Upton short line connected to Conrail's ex-Boston & Albany mainline between Boston and Worcester MA. Re: 1960 ART car available from the Missouri Pacific Historical Society
Walter Cox
Hi Charlie,
Thanks to your tip I managed to order 3 of the premium set on e-bay. They
arrived with two of each herald, i.e. 1 of each per car. Am I correct in my
recollection that ART started using 2 of each herald in 1953? If so I'll likely
need some extra heralds to model 1959. I dont, imagine a very large percentage
of the fleet would still be in the older scheme in 1959. The ART cars in Gene
Green's reefer book, and in the recent pic of Ogden yard on the list, really
stand out as they are so clean lookin. ART must have repainted their cars
often.
Thanks in advance for whatever info you may have on this topic. Walt

Tony Thompson writes in reply to Tim O'Connor:
"Tim is right about the PRR cars, but I confess my eye went first to the lovely string of PFE cars in the background, with a truly wonderful range of weathering. How many readers of this list can boast a similarly-varied string of reefers in their collection?" It looks like at least some of the PFE Reefers exhibit rather dirty sides but with less dirty SP and UP heralds. Also, note the second car to the left of the bright red GN car. It appears to be a UP 50 ft auto car in yellow lettering. It is obviously very dirty, much more so that the UP box car, the third car to its left. Man, how would you model Ogden without using that Wasatch Mtn backdrop? Mike Brock

ADMIN: Ebay Comments are out of scope. The Ebay thread is terminated.
Guys, note the STMFC rules:
"The objectives
include the sharing of information about North American, standard gauge railroad freight cars in the period 1900-1960 inclusive including their operation, distribution and the various techniques of building models of them. Discussions about the cargos of freight cars are permitted but only as they are directly associated with a freight car. Emphasis is to be placed on the study of the prototype with a goal of producing models of them with as great a degree of accuracy as possible." "ALL SUBJECTS OTHER THAN THOSE DIRECTLY ASSOCIATED WITH STEAM ERA
FREIGHT
CARS ARE PROHIBITED FROM MEMBER MESSAGES. Thus, all admin, security, or "policing" functions will be conducted only by myself or my representatives. Warnings about virus activity is strictly prohibited. Threads or subjects may be terminated only by myself or my representatives. When threads/subjects are terminated, members are expected to avoid sending messages associated with such threads/subjects." Certainly how a member purchases a model of
a frt car is not included by the STMFC rules which define the scope of the

Re: How long would a car builders painted logo survive?
Benjamin Hom
Jim Dick asked:
"My question is - would have these logos - Pacific Car and Foundry, Pressed Steel, Pullman Standard - survive for any great length of time?" These would last until the car's first repainting. "Great length of time" depends on the prototype. "Are any decal sets available for the above or other builders that anyone knows of? Are they up to the standards this group is comfortable with?" I have seen on builders photos, various logos from the car builders of freight cars delivered to (my primarily modeled) railroad. My question is - would have these logos - Pacific Car and Foundry, Pressed Steel, Pullman Standard - survive for any great length of time? Are any decal sets available for the above or other builders that anyone knows of? Are they up to the standards this group is comfortable with? Jim Dick - St. Paul, MN

Re: SHPX 55
Nelson Moyer <ku0a@...>
The SC&F upper tank half and domes are molded in one piece, so replacing the SC&F domes isn’t an easy option. I’ll look for the SHPX 55 photo at the next show we both attend. I bought the kits before your RTR model was released. Had I known it was coming, I wouldn’t have bought the kits. Now that I have two of them, I need to find a prototype for the second car.

It is a 6000 gallon car with a Standard Tank Car underframe. The tank is a match for the tank from Tangent Scale Models. The dome circumferences are a match too, although they are different in that they are not as tall as the Tangent domes, This is an easy fix with the Tangent design since you can remove some of the height from the Tangent dome before installing it.
