Re: Greenville kitbashed 52' gondolas
Garth Groff <sarahsan@...>
Andy and friends, I have one of your WP cars in my collection, but can't exactly
figure out how to use it since I don't model the WP mainline or
the USS Pittsburg (correct, no "h") works on the SN. It is a neat
little car, and you saved me from hacking up a Proto 2000 gon. :~)
I made coil racks for it, and loaded it with coils. For those of you who would like to see photos of these unique
cars, go here:
http://www.wplives.com/archives/freight/gondolas/index.html . Cars
6457 and 6462 show how they looked after their first repainting
circa 1960. Cars 4403 and 4414 represent the cars as they looked
near the end of their lives. The UP kept the 25 cars in the
renumbered 44XX series for a few years, mostly as MW cars, and one
was donated to the Feather River Railroad Musem:
http://www.wplives.org/collectionpageimages/freightcarimages/gondolas/wp6424.jpg
. This is how they looked when delivered, complete with the roller
freight herald. And yes, they were originally delivered with
roller bearing trucks. They also seemed to have had drop ends, but
on the cars I examined in the 1970s, the ends were secured upright
by a stout steel strap bolted to the bulb angle at each corner. Yours Aye,
Garth Groff

Last April Bill Gilbert gave a very good presentation on the WP shorty gondolas at the Pacific Coast Region/Feather River Rail Society joint convention in Modesto, CA. If anyone knows how to contact Bill you may be able to get some details on these rare cars. As Andy notes, these cars spent most of their time in captive service. Bob Chaparro Hemet, CA

Greenville kitbashed 52' gondolas
Andy Carlson
Years ago, long before P2K's Greenville 52' gondola was released, I made a resin kit pattern for a 1953 built WP 29' coil steel gondola by shortening the very similar (to the Greenville design) NSC (a Canadian co.) Despatch shops 52' gondola. The donor castings were done in some ABS, or other material, rather than the traditional polystyrene. The details, such as the ribs, were a bit more heavy than the later P2k's offering. The WP car isn't a good choice for widespread use, as the cars were used for the 1st 2 decades in captive service from Utah's Geneva Steel Works to the finishing mill in Pittsburg (no 'H'), California; an all WP/Sacramento Northern run. -Andy Carlson Ojai CA

#4 of the 36-foot box car summaries
Eric Hansmann
The final prototype data sheet has been posted for the upcoming Accurail 36-foot box car models. Ray Breyer takes a look at the cars with straight steel center sills and wood ends for the 1800 series of models. These data sheets cover the introductory roadnames for the four versions Accurail will be producing. Hello Greg,

Thanks for your response. Your offer is certainly appreciated. From what you have written I gather the carbody must be a regularly available kit. The Life-Like car or some other? What do you suggest for a decal source? The car frames are easy enough. I have some now while the rack can be built from photos that Phil Hastings sent me years ago. The things one misses not being able to attend Cocoa. Thanks again for your help. Enjoy the Cascades. Re: Ashley Drew & Northern flat car question
Garth Groff <sarahsan@...>
Jim, Maybe not that old, at least as far as the AD&N is concerned, unless it was renumbered. My 1958 ORER does not list a flat car with that numb er. At that time the AD&N owned 100-105, 41' 5" 50-ton cars 41 ' 5" over-all; 501-502, 40' 40-ton cars; and 601-605, 40' 5" 40-ton cars. And by the way, my ORER says "Freight cars owned are not used in
interchange service." Could 810 be a post-period acquisition? Yours Aye,Garth Groff

Re: Ashley Drew & Northern flat car question
mopacfirst
I replied to this several hours ago, but my reply seems to have gone to la-la land.
Could this be a MoPac car? The 13 stake pockets, the location of the tackboard and the fact that the car class FM is stenciled at the far right end of the side (even though this car is completely repainted) all look like this class of car, which was originally MP 8600-9199. I wrote an article on bashing this car in HO from an RC model for the MPHS Eagle, several years ago. Wasn't much of a bash, just re-spacing the stake pockets using the extras included in the kit. Ashley Drew & Northern flat car question
Jim King
I have an image of AD&N flat car #810 and it closely matches an ancient
American Flyer flat car that can easily be updated to match the car. There is no reference to any car in the 800-series on Fallen Flags or any other web photo resource I've found. The photo is dated 1968 but the car is obviously MUCH older. Does anyone have info about this car, the series it is in or came from, and photos of other similar cars? Pierre & Greg,
Are the DT&I gon castings still available somewhere??? I could use two kits for these cars as they regularly traveled between Michigan and the Ford assembly plant in Somerville, Mass, via the CPR and B&M. Where might two kits be found? Thanks for any response, Don Valentine

Bill,
I have one photo that we did not present at CCB that we used for the decals in the set that Jim Singer had made that Garth had provided us with, perhaps he will share privately,:however, the GM&O cars were late arrivals and long past the era of this list. Greg Martin

Bill Welch
Answering my own question with help, LOL
A couple of people contacted me offline and the answer is "Yes" but no real joy for me as the gons were ex-DT&I that did not go to the GM&O until 1968, well after my date. Darn! Good news for people like Tim O'Conner however in that there are decals available from Dan Kohlberg:

Am I correct that the GM&O also had gons like this. If I am correct, does anyone know of a source for photos?
GM&O is sort of an Honorary "Ya'll Road" like IC and T&NO in my universe. Thank you! Bill Welch
