Oiling ballast

Rupert & Maureen <gamlenz@...>

Re. the recent discussion about oiling ballast, there is a brief history at
https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=njp.32101048999310;view=1up;seq=95 and a list of railroads using oil at https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=njp.32101048999351;view=1up;seq=270

Both the CB&Q and B&MR sprayed ballast with oil to keep down dust. There is a photo (not the clearest) of track spraying using a tank car apparently owned by the CB&Q. I was previously advised that this was a Bettendorf tank car, although I’ve not seen any record that the Burlington had any from this company.

Subject: [STMFC] FLAT CAR HAND BRAKE QUESTION

Does anyone have any information on the mechanics of the drop shaft
handbrakes used on flat cars?
MY 1943 Car Builders Cyclopedia shows the front portion of his devise but I
am curious as to how the chain couples to this. Is ther a second geared
shaft behind the main shaft that is geared and wraps up the chain? The
front photos do not sem to leave much room for wrapping the chain on th
shaft.

As usual thanks in advance for any help.

Re: Weathered box cars

Eric Hansmann

Chuck,

I use paper stock for the route cards and placards on the models. Plain newsprint is cut into narrow strips about four inches wide. Small squares are cut from the strip and these are carefully placed on a small dot of canopy glue that has been applied to the model with a toothpick. I also use Post-it note material that is a buff or yellow shade.

For the partial cards, place a single edge razor blade at an angle over a short section. Place the blade flat on the cutting surface and pull the narrow paper strip up to tear the paper and leave a partial piece under the blade. I’ve noticed a variety of partial cards spread across wood sheathed cars. I model 1926 and much of the box car fleet will be wood sheathed, so there will be many partial cards on my models.

These details were inspired by Tony Thompson’s great blog posts on these details. After reading his latest few posts, I feel I should mark some with numbers or letters before cutting them from the paper strips. Here’s his latest piece on the route cards.

http://modelingthesp.blogspot.com/2016/07/route-cards-part-13-other-examples.html

These are very easy details to add to models. As Tony points out in a few of his posts, steel cars had a specific route card holder along the sill so the cards would be restricted to those placement spots.

As Tim suggested, I went to the RMJ issues he cited. Although I have the issues on the shelf, in the midst of lunch, I elected to go online to

https://www.trainlife.com/ .

What a surprise! The good guys at Exactrail have been busy, taking over ownership of the site, creating online and brick and mortar stores and maintaining the magazine database. They have lots of plans. I recommend y'all check it out.

Oh, yeah. The photos of the subject cars don't show much.

Nope: 22000-22349, and 22350-22499 (with end doors). All-steel boxcars built by Standard Steel in 1929. These were the first all-steel freight cars bought new by the NKP, and are vaguely similar to 1932 ARA boxcars.

Mike,

Nope.  Absolutely not the case here.  The star for messenger equipped cars was adopted in 1948.  The photo was taken in 1936 of an AUTOMOBILE boxcar.  I am not aware of any boxcar, ever, equipped with auto loaders (the horizontal white stripe on the door) and messenger service (desk and toilet).

On many roads a star on the door or near the number on a baggage or express car would signify that the car was equipped for a messenger, and that someone may be on board.  We don't know the story behind this photo, but if the car was intended to carry any of those people in a passenger train (one does have a bed roll), that may be the case here. There is a camp car nearby.

On the Lackawanna steel cabooses a star near the number denoted a flush toilet. Might convey the same message, after all.

The car appears to have steel side sheathing. The Southern Pacific
had single sheathed auto box cars built with steel sheathing, such as
the 50 foot A-50-10. But the posts and diagonals are closer together
than on that SP car, so I wonder if this is a 40 foot car.

Bob,

I believe that the stars are a notation as to the type of automobile rack in the car. These marking usually denote the type of loader, the clearance and the number of floor tubes, but it is my understanding that custom markings could be used… and given the photo is relatively early in tthe auto rack era it may be before the general rules were created.

I love the script "autos" on the door… but I can't tell if it is a stencil or a challk mark.

Does anyone know the meaning of the two stars on the boxcar door seen on this photo link?

In looking through my photo collection I have identified two 1/87 models so far I want to build using Dan Hall's very fine doors:

—A 1947 Blt. 40-ft. Monon Welded car with a 7-panel Superior door—this is actually fairly far along using a C&BT body sanded down. I am almost ready to apply Archer model aircraft panel line decals to replicate the weld lines.

—A 1942 Blt. Southern 40-ft 10'6" high riveted car using the InterMountain kit and Red Caboose roof with DH's 5-panel Superior doors.

I am aware of the DH door usage for ATSF and SP models. This leaves me wondering what the other possibilities are? Is there a database somewhere specifically for using Mr. Halls doors?

Alternatively are there individuals here that have identified a model or models they plan to build with these doors that they would like to tell us about?

Thank you!
