http://www.kansasmemory.org/item/218115/page/1
It shows workmen engaged in some activity along a string of boxcars and racks of lumber spaced out along the cars. The caption notes that this is conditioning yard at Clovis, New Mexico.
My initial thoughts are that the cars are being prepared for grain doors or that car interiors are being refurbished. The lack of used, broken boards on the ground probably weights against refurbishing.
Can anyone make an educated guess as to what actually is the activity?
Thanks.

What a great detail photo, especially when enlarged. Did anyone notice that the Chicago & Northwestern boxcar had a CMO reporting mark? I assume that is the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis & Omaha Railway Company. Bob Chaparro Hemet, CA

I enjoy tank-car underframes very much ... let's see: Judging from the sill steps and lack of end or side sills, built by General American? Three drains: three compartments. Bleed rod comes straight across, over the reservoir: AB valve must be buried, straight opposite the reservoir. I'm sure others can spot more. Y'all have fun, now, hear? Al Brown, Melbourne, Fla.

There have been many molds built over the years, and each designer has to weigh all his options, then make what he feels are the best choices. Aside from where the ejector pins will go, the other consideration is where the plastic will be injected into the part, the "sprue" and "gate". Unless this is a really complicated mold, the "E pins" will always be on the side opposite the gate. If you want the pin prints to be on the underside of the slope sheets, that means the gate needs to be in the center of the interior of the part, which either puts it on the cross ridge, or the centersill over the center hopper on a triple. In addition, it puts the gate deep into the part, which means a long sprue. Since sprues need to be tapered, the longer it is, the bigger the scar it leaves on the part. Heated sprue bushings can allow a "pin point" gate, but accommodating the heated bushing in the narrow confines of the core that makes the car interior becomes problematic. The other way to design things is to orient the part so the gate is on the underside, between the hoppers. This puts the e-pins on the slope sheets, but since the slope sheets are the traditional location for car weights, they can be covered by separate slope sheet parts. Indented pin prints are not from ejecting the part too hot, but is rather intentional to make little seats so the part stays on the pin ends and comes out of the mold straight, without dragging a detailed surface on part of the mold. It also helps insure that the pin prints don't stand above the surrounding surface and form shallow bumps that get in the way of other parts. Ejector pins in the typical mold for an HO scale body are somewhere about 6" or 7" long, and change length relative to the rest of the mold as the mold temperature changes, so a perfect match is seldom possible. DL&W yard and distant freight cars - 1911
Schuyler Larrabee
http://lists.railfan.net/erielackphoto.cgi?erielack-08-07-16/B0798.jpg et seq.
This image plus the few after this one show a LARGE number of steam era freight cars in 1911, way before the transition era, but still very interesting. Since these are glass plate negatives, the resolution is quite sharp even when zoomed way in.
Check out the loads in both the open topped cars and the hoppers. Not all coal is the same, even in two cars coupled together. All the coal you see, though, is most likely Anthracite, just in different sizes.
Enjoy!

Re: Circles in Plastic Castings
Schuyler Larrabee
They are caused by ejector pins. Moldings don’t automatically eject from the dies and have to be pushed out. I agree they can be a pain, especially in older dies where you can find flash standing normal to the surface, which has to be shaved off.

Nothing we can do about it except fill them in but, why are there small circular holes or impressions in various plastic castings? They can't be for material-flow in the casting process ??? Re: Weathered box cars
Eric Hansmann
Chuck,
I use paper stock for the route cards and placards on the models. Plain newsprint is cut into narrow strips about four inches wide. Small squares are cut from the strip and these are carefully placed on a small dot of canopy glue that has been applied to the model with a toothpick. I also use Post-it note material that is a buff or yellow shade.
For the partial cards, place a single edge razor blade at an angle over a short section. Place the blade flat on the cutting surface and pull the narrow paper strip up to tear the paper and leave a partial piece under the blade. I’ve noticed a variety of partial cards spread across wood sheathed cars. I model 1926 and much of the box car fleet will be wood sheathed, so there will be many partial cards on my models.
These details were inspired by Tony Thompson’s great blog posts on these details. After reading his latest few posts, I feel I should mark some with numbers or letters before cutting them from the paper strips. Here’s his latest piece on the route cards. http://modelingthesp.blogspot.com/2016/07/route-cards-part-13-other-examples.html
These are very easy details to add to models. As Tony points out in a few of his posts, steel cars had a specific route card holder along the sill so the cards would be restricted to those placement spots.
