Built by Haskell & Barker between 12/1912 and 3/1913, lot 544. They're "semi-Fowlers", but with a then-conventional deep fishbelly underframe (guess the Monon's chief mechanical engineer didn't trust the 45,000 or so Fowler/Dominion cars then running around North America).

These short, single sheathed boxcars still accounted for half of the road's boxcar fleet in 1945, but were all gone from revenue service by 1950. In MOW service a few lasted into the 1960s.

Hmm... this discussion got me to wondering if Archer Surface Details would help me scratch build a roof on a DT&I rebuild from 1936.  I don't think that the half-round styrene shapes are available small enough to replicate the riblets on the Cambre radial roof shown here:

I don't have any Archer sheets to look at, can you give me an idea if they would work?  I bet there aren't too many Cambre roofs out there!  But, I don't think you can build a convincing version of this car without that roof, and I have a soft spot for the oddball rebuilds done during the 30's.  Plus, Detroit is the northern terminus of my road.

I have a couple questions about the Evans Products "Quick Loaders" moveable bulkheads used inside box cars in the late-50's and early-60's.


1)  I assume they were equipped with two stowable bulkheads per car?


2) Does anyone have a good scan of the QL stencil that they can send me directly?  They were not advertised in my 1957 CBC and were gone in 1963.  The C&O orders were in December 1958 -March 1959 as steam was disappearing.

I think the shot of the end is fantastic. Any chance its still available from Chad? If so, can you provide his contact info? Sorry I couldn't make it to CCB, but I was in Fayettville, NC seeing my grandson and new granddaughter and their parents.

I would have liked to have been there at the show just to say hi to one and all.

I received my N-34 here in Europe one month ago and I had no problems getting in touch with people from SMD... The hopper is beautyfull. Pricy but worth the money IMO.

As most of you know from my earlier post, Richard F. Dermody, a longtime member of this list, passed away on 15 Aug.
Like many of us who have been in this hobby for many years he left a ton of kits, most of them unassembled. Dick was
the oldest of four brothers and his next youngest brother, Chris, and I will be at the Amherst Railway Society Show in
West Springfield, Mass. on 28 & 29 January with as much of it as we can handle. I have reserved an extra table this year
for New England Rail Service and will probably use only one for NERS so that two can be used for the material from Dick's estate. There are many cars kits from Sunshine, IMWX, Red Caboose and others along with ready-to-run models from
InterMountain, Atlas, Tangent and others. Many are obviously out-of-production currently. I believe most folks will find them reasonably priced though not "bargain basement" as we continue to try to get the best value we can out of these items
for Dick's widow and have been pleased the way things have gone to date. There are also a few brass locomotives, mostly 
Rutland and Central Vermont but some others we cannot explain why Dick had. How about four or five PFM Santa Fe 
2-8-0's. He may have picked them up years ago for possible conversion to Central Vermont 2-8-0's. Otherwise I have no
clue as to their presence. Hope to see many of you there as that is the only way you will find what is available, all of which
is of the STMFC era.

Hi Mark,

   Have not seen you in awhile but have seen Bill Karl of Spring Mills Depot. Expect you will find him at the Amherst Railway Society Show on the 28th & 29th of this month. I have known Bill since 2011 when I joined the Four Counties Group and attended when I could when in VA. Bill is a straight shooter so if you are
not receiving a response as quickly as you'd like there is more than likely a good reason for it. Spring Mills is still, to the best of my knowledge, a part time venture of Bill and his partner with both holding full time jobs.
Shipment may have been delayed as well and he may be as unhappy with that fact as you are with the lack of response. I'd recommend that everyone just be a bit more patient.

Bill,
I reviewed your photos and think you have done an excellent job. The Archer Raised Panel Lines take some time and practice to learn, but with one car under your belt, you certainly have shown that the learning curve is not overly difficult to master. The raised panel lines allow for modeling different prototypes or to improve existing models. I can think of several car classes from ACL, CofG, and Southern that will benefit from their presence on the market. The Archer welds are too heavy in my opinion whereas these raised panel lines provide the scale appearance modelers desire.

Those of us that have built a model airplane know exactly what Archer has done. In the 1960's on, when model airplane kits really blossomed, all of them represented the aluminum panel lines with a raised line. Serious aircraft modelers at some point began to completely sand the surface of their models and scribe new panel line into the surface. There are templates to help scribe things with rounded shapes or corners. Eventually, certainly by the early 1990's manufacturers had developed the knowledge and technology—if that was what was preventing them doing so—or decided to meet the demand of modelers for better detail. Hmm, sound like anyone we know?

For whatever reason  Archer produces decals to replicate this old kit look. Thank you Archer!

Here is a tip from my experience using them: At first I cut the decal film as close as I could. By the time I was onto the second side I realized that if I left a wider margin of film, they were easier to get down straight.
