I haven’t tried the new Rustoleum, but I custom mix their Camouflage paint for ties and also use their primer for rails. I hot glue a flex straw to the nozzle and spray it into a deep jar. You cannot do a whole can at a time because the paint has to be decanted to get the propellant out. Fasted way (but could be messy as paint boils up) is to use an electric stirrer. Just letting it sit for a few days works better. I dilute the paint with the old type lacquer thinner. I use an OSHA approved spray mask with NEW filters. I have a free standing building for the layout. I also keep doors open at both ends with a fan blowing air in at one end and blowing out at the other. I use the paint in a Badger Patriot 105 (gravity feed) which is easier to clean than another brand I have which is siphon feed.

The answer is simple: clean up.
I've used an airbrush since the 1970s, but I also like to use a spray can whenever possible because you don't have to clean up after it. I usually use the small cans of Dullcoat as a final finish, but I will definitely try the Rust-Oleum product. George York

Anspach Denny <danspachmd@...>
I too have used spray cans of various origins for a number of broad-based or background model painting projects over the years NOT requiring precision or critical application , including Floquil, Pactra, and Krylon. Aside from issues of paint clogging (@#$%^&###, but correctable), the biggest and most irritating issue has been running out of propellant long before the can is empty of paint. This has been so especially with expensive Floquil. I suspect that I run out of it because of the need to use so much of the propellant to clear the nozzle and prevent clogging after each short use!
Like Don V, I also have used successfully my old Paasche single action air brush, first purchased and used in the early ‘50s. What a fine instrument! That said, on a whim on the receiving end of a very persuasive salesman, I purchased an Iwata Eclipse double action five years ago, and……I have never looked back. Denny Denny S. Hello Group,

The Rust-Oleum “Dead Flat Clear” sound interesting and worth a try. The comment about having issues using Dullcoat from the spray can I fully understand. My solution to this was to be sure that the can was well shook and then spray it directly into my air brush cup — within the paint booth, of course, as there is a good deal of spray floating about — then apply to the model. That said, I am wondering if the Rust-Oleum comes in a can or bottle along with the rattle can? If not, then perhaps spraying into a jar and then using that to spray from an air brush might be a good solution. Cheers, Bill Keene Irvine, CA

I paint pretty exclusively with acrylics, Badger,
PollyScale, Model Masters, etc. But I will use Dullcote, or similar, in a
spray can for a final flat. After many years of dreading painting, I now
have a good compressor, tank, trap, regulator, etc. as well as a nice Paasche
booth with fan and filter. Currently, I move the booth onto the
washer, next to the basement sink, when I am ready to paint for quick clean
up.

Re: Rust-Oleum Dead Flat Clear Finish
Greg,
My approach is very similar to Chuck Cover. I use spray cans of Model Master Acryl black on ALL my brass models as a primer coat, and then typically top coat that with acrylics with my airbrush. The Model Master spray bombs work great and the paint is fantastic,
with very fine particles and a nice ability to self level. I honestly wish that there were more colors that I could use for top coats in that line.
As a note, I have had nothing but terrible results from Dullcoat in a spray can.

Never! I have a Paasche VL I have been using for years. Everything I paint except for wheels and small details gets sprayed. I built a “spay booth” with exhaust fan into a former window opening in my basement shop area.

Hi Nelson,
If you go to Atlas' website and into their on-line store then run a search for "BL1" you will see that they still have some Branchline parts still available. Didn't see any ends but they have a number of different doors listed. They don't seem to list these parts through their normal on-line catalog, you have to run a search for them. Another option is ebay if you don't mind dealing with them. There is a seller that sells undecorated sets that may have what you need. I have bought several of these sets from this seller and they have lots of good useful parts. http://stores.ebay.com/Valley-Trains?_trksid=p2047675.l2563 http://www.ebay.com/itm/HO-Branchline-Blueprint-Series-40-Box-Car-with-7-Door-THREE-3-KITS-/351943822042?hash=item51f17c8ada:g:2FIAAOSw6n5Xr5AM http://www.ebay.com/itm/HO-Branchline-Blueprint-Series-50-AAR-Double-Door-Box-THREE-3-KITS-/351924282828?hash=item51f05265cc:g:tusAAOSwsN9XCXBp -Jeff

Re: My Airbrush Cleaning Routine
I’m with Clark, I paint acrylics and prefer to set up my spray booth next to a sink. I keep a bottle of window cleaner handy. After painting I run hot water through the airbrush, then some window cleaner, then flush with more hot water. Since I started this routine I have not encountered a clogged airbrush.
I saw in a recent video that Ken Patterson mounted his spray booth fan motor outside the building, eliminating the noise inside. That idea intrigues me. As I have to go through a window in my new home (brick house I do not own) I may consider that idea. For now as I use acrylic, the outside exhaust is not a requirement, just the spraybooth with a good filter. I use the pleated filters from the furnace.

Re: Rust-Oleum Dead Flat Clear Finish
Chuck Cover
For all of my projects, locomotives, freight cars and structures, I first use a spray can of flat black as a primer. I have used various brands including ACE and Rust-Oleum. For the finish color I will use the air brush when I have an acceptable color available. I favor the left over Floquil that I have horded and Scalecoat. I do not like to use acrylic paints in the airbrush.
I recently found ACE red oxide primer to be a reasonable FCC for PRR rolling stock. I use a spray booth for all solvent based painting and adhesives. The spray booth is next to a double hung window that I removed the screen from and put in a piece of plywood with a vent for the spray booth. When I use the spray booth, I open the window and attach the exhaust to the vent. When I am done, just disconnect the exhaust and close the window.

I’ll put myself at the opposite end of the spectrum from Bill ;
) After spraying enamels or whatever I just squirt brake cleaner through my
Paasche H3. If I used acrylics I hold it under the faucet and run water through
it. I do break it down a couple times a year. Important to have a sink
near your paint booth.

I’ve used spray cans at work forever, some brands are better than others.
At home I’ve used Testors Dullcote in a can years ago, but it seemed to always
end up with a spotty finish? Lately I’ve used white primer to paint a couple
large structures. Here in the north country it would be difficult you use rattle
cans year round. I need to paint some trees. Later this week it’s suppose to
(maybe) hit 40. I’ll lay a drop cloth over my work bench in the garage, stick
the trees in foam, run out to the garage, spray them with a couple different
camo shades and run them back in the basement. I have a large paint booth, but
not large enough to paint a gaggle of trees in.

T.J. Stratton
I'm a Badger airbrush fan. I use their line of paints as well as Tru Color and Scalecoat II. I have a paint booth that vents to the outdoors thru a dryer vent in the block windows. While a rattle can sounds slick, I feel that the paint flow could be way be too heavy for painting of H.O. size rolling stock. I have painted a number of buildings with rattle cans with fine results.
Regarding economic airbrush set ups, several years ago I purchased a small compressor and airbrush as a set from Harbor Freight, for about $75 as I recall. That kept me painting when recalled to active duty during Operation Iraqi Freedom. I only used Badger paint thru that rig but still, I have no complaints about the results.
