PRR X29 MoW Gray in Company Sand Service
rwitt_2000
Company Sand Service:
I don't recall seeing this prototype before. It appears to have small roof hatches for loading. http://tinyurl.com/j8xkxx8 The re-weigh date looks like something "54". Were these cars covered in the series of articles on the X29 in the Keystone? Bob Witt

Re: [ATSF] SFRD 50 foot wood reefer question
Steve SANDIFER
It must be an RR-10, built in May 1931. Some of the RR-10s were modified into RR-17 and RR-26 by adding more insulation inside, but externally they would have appeared virtually the same. Some received steel roofs and two received steel ends. The live list shows 80 RR-10s in 1945, 4 in 1947-1956, and 2 in 1963. 10 RR-17s operated 1942-56 dropping to 1 in 1963. The RR-27 numbered 10 from 1940-56 and then dropped to 1 in 1963.

Re: early ORER's
The Barriger Library in St. Louis has quite a few ORERs. I don't know how they feel about making copies, but 15 years ago they were out on the shelf and anyone who visited could lug one over to a photocopier.

Re: early ORER's
Good morning, Mike,
A list of all ORER volumes so far found between 1890 and 1917 on google books is provided in the files section under the file name "ORER 1893-1917 Google Books.xlsx". There are over 150 volumes included. Each listing is provided with a URL for quick access. The list is an amalgamation of volumes found (not easy) by Ray Breyer and myself and is updated about once a year if new volumes have been found. Cheers Eric Lombard Homewood, IL

SFRD 50 foot wood reefer question
Obviously one of the Santa Fe's 50 foot wood sheathed reefers, but can
anyone identify it's original class? It appears to be in mofw (company) service now and they usually were reclassified into a Wr-xx class but it's illegible in this photo. http://www.ebay.com/itm/401237172798 Tim O'Connor

Re: early ORER's
Richard Townsend
I have a vague recollection of those days. Well, actually a sharp recollection. And it wasn't that long ago. When I went to the CSRM library a few years back they wouldn't copy ORERs that they didn't have duplicates of. So I transcribed the pages I needed from maybe 30 or so ORERs (I wanted the C&S info from every ORER they had). It was mildly tedious but I got the info I wanted. And actually it was easy to do.

Re: Ribbed-Back Wheels
rhammill
In Martin Robert Karig III's book "Coal Cars: The First 300 Years" he uses the term on pg 165:
"The initial single-plate design (in 1928) did not include the brackets with which cast-iron wheels are often identified, but these were added in 1938 to reinforce the rim and the flange."And figure 6.34 on the prior page identifies it as a "bracket or rib." The brackets were also on the earlier double-plate design that the single-plate design replaced. Randy -- Randy Hammill Modeling the New Haven Railroad 1946-1954 -- True Line Trains

OK, clearly I should have completed some more research first. Here are all the ones I could find:

I was finally able to get the discount. The charge of $83 was about 1/3 the price of the selected items. Suddenly, a $10 kit becomes $13.33....... Once again, I passed. -Andy Carlson Ojai CA

Hi Tony,
If Stanford will not allow many people to touch the older ORER's and will not make copies available what good are they to anyone? My best, Don Valentine

I just ordered 19 boxcars for $75 and change. USPS ground postage to Sunbury, Pa. was $15.65 for a $91 plus change total. KITBASH must be in capital letters.

I seem to recall reading somewhere the industry term for the ribs was brackets. Is this correct or was the long-forgotten source incorrect?
