Randy Hammill quoted Bob Karig:
I made the same point in my article in _Model Railroad Hobbyist_ in the issue for September 2016. (you can read or download it for free at their websiste, www.mrhmag.com ). The term "arms" was also used for the ribs or brackets. I tried in that article, incidentally, to point out the many myths that have been circulated to explain why the ribs are there, and to give the factual reason: strengthening the wheel. Since I started this thread, I went back to the Atlas site and
tried again. Same story, $70.92 for 19 freight cars & $70.53
UPS. I can get it next day air for 430.86. So I revised the order to
7 cars. Same song, second verse; $22.98 for the cars and $20.47 UPS or
$36.95 USPS Priority. I have never gotten the low cost options that Jon
Miller said he got. Craig Strickland

Re: SFRD 50 foot wood reefer question
John Moore
The 50 foot refrigerator car is in company ice service. Typically when a car is reclassified from revenue service into company service the reporting marks are changed from SFRD to ATSF. Interesting that this car did not have the reporting marks changed from SFRD to ATSF.
The car classification was probably Rr-37 and was a super insulated car rebuilt from Rr-10. The super insulated cars were in frozen food service until displaced by the MTC cars. In company ice service the car was reclassified Ie-R. There were several shots of this car which have appeared on ebay. The car classification shows up clearly in other shots. My guess is that the photo is probably from the late1960s. John B. Moore, Jr. Albuquerque

Re: Atlas/Branchline Sale
Fred_Swa@...
My experience is the same as Jon's. The $7 postage is for USPS First class mailing for 6 cars. When I first tried it with 1 car $12.00 for Priority Mail was the lowest option. Fred Swanson ---In STMFC@..., <timboconnor@...> wrote : Weird. I tried with FOUR box cars and got $22 as the lowest shipping charge. No thanks. I don't see how you could get 6 Pullmans into an express mail package for $7. I ship stuff by USPS all the time and it costs me $7 to ship a 1 lb package inside Massachusetts, and much more than that to California. Maybe the Atlas warehouse is next door to you? Tim

Re: [ATSF] SFRD 50 foot wood reefer question
Steve SANDIFER
It must be an RR-10, built in May 1931. Some of the RR-10s were modified into RR-17 and RR-26 by adding more insulation inside, but externally they would have appeared virtually the same. Some received steel roofs and two received steel ends. The live list shows 80 RR-10s in 1945, 4 in 1947-1956, and 2 in 1963. 10 RR-17s operated 1942-56 dropping to 1 in 1963. The RR-27 numbered 10 from 1940-56 and then dropped to 1 in 1963.
