Re: Westerfield S-40-1 stock car

I've bought several different Vallejo paint colors through a little joint called Amazon. Micro-Mark also offers many of the Model Air colors and they relabeled them to reflect Floquil and Polly-S colors. I bought several of those and was disappointed in the labeling. But an inexpensive color wheel helped me understand some basics and I typically add drops of other color to achieve my end results. For instance, my go-to mineral brown starts with a Burnt Umber and I add 10 drops of aged white to lighten the color. I covered some of this mixing in a recent blog post on car painting. http://designbuildop.hansmanns.org/2017/02/18/fresh-paint/ Eric Hansmann El Paso, TX

Re: Westerfield S-40-1 stock car

Very nice build, Eric. That car has so much character, that I really wanted to get one until I checked the 1953 ORER and found that only eighty-two 36’ stock cars are listed for UP, one 35576, one 36357, and eighty 36752-38149. You didn’t give the series range for your car, but it probably fits in somewhere with the onesies, and not the eighties, meaning that I can’t justify one on my roster. That’s the down side of prototype modeling, i.e. it requires self-discipline and restraint.
By contrast, the CB&Q had 2699 37’ stock cars in 1953, so if you want to model stock trains of that era, it’s a good prototype, and even if you don’t model the CB&Q, it’s highly likely that at least one SM-16 or SM-18 would show up in your trains from time to time. The Q leased Mather stock cars, so while the Sunshine kits are no more, the P2K Mather cars lettered for CB&Q could be used for the occasional off road stock car. Vallejo? It’s been around for years (since 1965). It is mostly used by military modelers, so check out the local shops that cater to that crowd, like my local USA Hobbies. I used the older non “air” formulation which requires massive thinning
for airbrushing. It, and Model Master are the only hobby supplies available within 100 miles of me! Vallejo is also making a very interesting line of weathering products.

I'm
looking forward for different paint schemas of these cars! However one
is an absolute need, the ladder steps and handholds are to remove and
must be replaced by such made from wire!

Re: "Vehicle" Car
rwitt_2000
According to the book PM Revenue Freight Cars by Million and Paton this series, 42650-43149, was listed as "Vehicle" wood and were built for automobile service. The builders photo on page 28 shows a car stenciled with "Vehicle". Apparently they didn't necessarily have larger doors when built, but the authors state that they were 17" taller than other box cars in their fleet. There are roster notes stating that by 1908 25 cars had full size end doors and by 1911 48 cars were so equipped. Later by 1931, after the date of the photo, some cars were rebuilt with staggered double-doors.
The car in the photo #42794 doesn't appear to have end doors, but it does have a lumber door. Regards, Bob Witt

"Vehicle" Car

I noticed that Pere Marquette 42794, a single door boxcar, has the word "Vehicle" instead of the expected "Automobile". Is there any significance to this or is it just the preference of the PM paint shop? http://lists.railfan.net/erielackphoto.cgi?erielack-02-08-17/X1347-1.jpg

The problem here is that there were two different boards, both of which COULD be called "tack" boards because things were tacked or stapled to them. One is a PLACARD board. This is the big board, high up on the door in the early transition era, used to attach placards on topics such as hazardous contents or loading or handling instructions. The other is a ROUTE CARD board, the smaller board on the door, or down near the side sill on gondolas and some reefers, a board less than a fourth the size of the PLACARD board. It was used to hold routing cards. Use of the term "tack board" is non-specific and should probably be avoided.
