Like many I have a large stash of unbuilt resin kits. Purchased while available, stashed while building a large operating layout. The layout, and moving it multiple times, has occupied my hobby time. As operations commence, improving the quality of freight cars on the layout is taking focus, ie replace the Athearn, Varney, AHM, etc with prototypically correct and better detailed cars. What I need to do is look at my stash and determine if there are kits that do not fit the era and focus, for which this group has been highly helpful in furthering my education.

I guess it's time that I reply to this. First, I do not ever recall stating that I would not entertain the idea of consolidating all of this into a book. It's possible I did, but I certainly don't remember it. However, I have read numerous times about things I have said and done that were not the case so it's possible that I stated something that was easily interpreted differently than I intended.

That said, I have discussed the idea of doing a book, although books is more realistic. My vision is 3-4 perfect bound (paperback) volumes.

The fly in the ointment in all of this is that a lot has changed since these articles were published. Many of the kits are no longer available, many have been superseded by one or more styrene (or resin) offerings, and several are ones where I (or others) are actively pursuing replacement kit offerings. I also have several subjects that were never covered that would need to be completed and incorporated into a latter part of the compendium. It's not that I don't see a value in this; it's more that it would be an undertaking well above and beyond just putting them together into book form.

To summarize, it's a project I heartily embrace. I just need to insert it into the queue.

Jack,

That's an excellent point. I just wish I had a way to know the market for writing and publishing material about things that are out of production, but in peoples' stashes in large enough quantities to justify the effort! I am sure I could make some educated guesses about this give what Martin produced and my basic understanding of what sold. I could also put a list of cars into an online survey and see what wins out. Technology tools are easy to find to help with the research gathering.

The plain arched end is included. The 6th end is the flat end with U channels instead of angles.

You list three ends included in the kit. By "peaked" do you mean the "arch" or "radial" ends or the angular heap shields. The Dreadnaught end is based on the arch end. They also list a notched arch end. By my count there are five different ends: flat, arch, notched arch, arch with Dreadnaught and angular heap shields. I am looking for the plain arch end

Yes it does, Bob. Upon brief inspection it has peaked, C&O Dreadnaught peaked and regular flat ends.

Help with C&EI FGE insulated box cars

I am researching the Chicago & Eastern Illinois involvement with Fruit Growers Express and am looking for more information on FGE itself. Does anyone know where I might find FGE records of C&EI lease agreements? Any help would be appreciated.

At this point I have what I believe to be a complete roster with around eight or so photos.

Question, from what I have read, FGE started around 1920 but the C&EI didn't begin to lease cars till 1952, why not earlier?

While your articles subject matter were not really pertinent to me as I was and am an N Scale modeler. However, the information, tips and techniques certainly were. I read each and every one of those articles and still have those issues. That said, I too would welcome a book.

But I agree with you, things have changed a lot, and for the better in many regards. Although the current desire RTR freight cars seems to have diminished the availability of the stuff MODELERS need (and in this context, I am only referring to those who like to built kits or from scratch or a combination, and am not criticizing others).

To be pertinent, a good number of things would need to be updated, and I can see where that would be quite a project. Hopefully it is something that you can eventually do, it would find a ready audience, even this N Scaler!
