B-end photos are indeed rare: Series 85400-86399 (1000 cars), car 86243 had a Miner brake Segregated service cars in series 600000-601999 (2000 cars), car 600635 had a Universal with dished pressed-steel wheel 7-panel Superior doors,, rectangular grid r/b, nice Pressed Steel Car Co logo to left of door, plus this is one class that DID have a hyphen between X and 43B (as in X-43B; B is NOT smaller than other letters/numbers), as painted. New Haven Steel Boxcars and other Northeastern Fleets Excluding PRR, NYC, B&O
Bill Welch
My photo shopping at C'ville included two color shots of NYNH&H steel boxcars, a 1937 in black /w orange doors and a post-war 10-ft high car w/Improved Dreadnaught ends in orange paint, both with the large NH. My modeling plan currently is to do a 1937 IMWX model with the original Script scheme using Speedwitch decals and an InterMountain 1937 kit with GN Improved Dreadnaught ends with Archer Rivets in the orange scheme using "Smoke Box" decals. Although I have a pretty good overall grasp of northeastern boxcars, it would be fun to know more details about the various fleets—excluding PRR, B&O, and NYC that I already have a good grasp of. I am wondering if perhaps the various historical society magazines may over the years have included in-depth articles on their respective 40-foot boxcar fleets, specifically Erie, DL&W, NYNH&H, CNJ, D&H, LNE, Reading and LV. Probably left someone off here. Hoping there are individuals in this group that are part of these Historical Societies that may be able to give me a reference. I have the several Tables of steel boxcars from Ed Hawkins but articles have a way of enlivening the imagination. It would also be great to see presentations at various RPMs about these companies freight car fleets. Bill Welch

What I see as curious in this photo is the tank car in the background. I can't get it too clear. A number of straps around it. Maybe just maybe, holding wood planking in place for insulation. But, I admit could be just scan lines that I think I am seeing. Andy

I'm still waiting for an HO 10K AC&F high-walkway tank. The low-walkway version would be nice too. The 10K was extremely common, and could still be found into the early 1950s, or longer in MW service (the WP was one of the last owners, and one is preserved at the Western Railway Museum). F&C has done both high and low 8K versions, but except for some brass models from long ago, a 10K kit or RTR is still lacking. Yours Aye, Garth Groff

I bought Speedwitch K128, 36 ft. double deck series 53500-53999 stock car in Collinsville, and I’m having trouble finding prototype information online. In fact, the series range is the only prototype information I’ve found, other than the black and white prototype photo from Speedwitch. I need painting information for the car body and trucks, and any other photographs and prototype information would be helpful.

Scale Modlel Supplies did purchase the final inventory of Camp Decal Company; however, not in sets. The inventory was as it came from the printer prior to being broken into sets in packages. Therefore, if you are looking for a set you must consult an old Champ Decal catalog to find the number of the Champ set you are looking for and provide Scale Models the set number. Scale Model people will refer to the materials received from Champ that tell them how to put a decal set together from the printed decals sheets to see if the set requested can be made up. If it can be made up Scale Models notifies you that the Champ set requested can be purchased. How do I know this? I have been through the process several times with success with some sets and not with others. ....and that indeed is a coke plant in back. You can see the batteries in distant right. The building to front is where coal is charged into larry cars for charging the batteries. What we are looking at in front is likely the yard where outbounds and inbounds are handled for in-plant switching. The coke in the loaded cars is finer than you usually see coke, but it was produced in several grades for different uses.

Re: Interesting Freight Car
That is a coke rack, most likely placed on a flatcar body, or possibly a gon. The car is used to transport coke. Lettering would be like that found on flatcars or gons.

Coke is less dense than coal and is in large chunks, so a tall car with slats is good enough to handle this cargo. The presence of stock cars with this car is no accident as some stock cars of the late 19th and early 20th century were equipped with drop doors for use of the cars to handle coke. Ben Hom

Not lacking, most likely hidden by the cars in front. Note how tall it is compared to the CB&Q stock car it’s coupled to.
