Re: Location Of Reporting Marks
Tony Thompson
It is important to recognize that a "standard" was not necessarily REQUIRED to be followed. It was common for double-door cars to have the reporting marks to the right of the car door; many railroads did that, including SP (with 40-ft. DD cars, anyway). There were lots of "standard" lettering arrangements that individual railroads could, and did, violate as they saw fit Tony Thompson Editor, Signature Press, Berkeley, CA 2906 Forest Ave., Berkeley, CA 94705 www.signaturepress.com (510) 540-6538; e-mail, tony@... Re: NYC Steel Gondola photo (Steam Loco Hulk)

If you model the steam or transition era, a load of scrap that comes from steam locomotives is prototypical. I have a photo of an IC gondola that was cut down to a low side gon and is lettered for scrap service to one of the big roundhouses (Markham IIRC) I've got a gondola load of steam loco scrap, I never imagined it would offend anyone...... Yes, I know people who are offended by what they perceive is a desecration of any steam locomotive, but when it comes to a gondola scrap load, "parts is parts".

Location Of Reporting Marks
thecitrusbelt@...
I know that in 1909 the Master Car Builders' issued a standard requiring reporting marks to be located at left end of a car's side. But every once or so I see a photo of a car with the reporting marks on the right end, such as this example:
http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=2713914
And while this photo was taken in 1977 (admittedly past our group's time frame) I believe the shadow keystone herald was used from about 1954 to the early 1960s, which is within our time frame.
So, was the original Master Car Builders' standard replaced or relaxed at some point?
Thanks.

Bob,

I caught it, but refrained from mentioning same for fear of offending somebody. Believe it or not, it happened to me. Many years ago I did some assembly work for Grandtline, building air pumps up from several pieces. They were to be used as investments for lost wax castings on a D&RGW narrow gauge 2-8-2. I was allowed to keep any that were defective, and a lot of them lost the tiny little piston during casting or in handling/assembly. Some of the defects were glued together, weathered up and used as a gondola load. When I took this car to the club, several die-hard steam fans were really insulted and angry that I would commit such sacrilege! I still have the load, and could put it into another gondola someday. I still have a mess of the failures, and might have enough to do two cars. 😈 Yours Aye, Garth Groff

Re: Recommendations on Blasting Media and Gloves
I by gloves from Harbor Freight. They last about 2 years before the rubber falls apart. I use 200 grit aluminum oxide. Very safe to use on anything. Larger grit will work faster but can cause damage to soft materials.
I need to do some heavy maintenance on my old North Coast sandblasting booth. I need new gloves for it. Can anyone recommend good gloves and an online place to get them? Also, what blasting media is recommended for plastic and resin models?

The number looks like 604697 which would make it 687-G (1939 rebuilds from four donor lots) http://www.canadasouthern.com/caso/images/lot-687.jpg Tim O' Is any one able to identify this NYC gondola or its Lot number? http://www.ebay.com/itm/112567520749 Regards, Robert Bogie

You catch on quickly, Tony. Perhaps you're not familiar with the "parts of speech" use of the word BUT in this case used to introduce something contrasting with what has already been mentioned. In other words, I corrected my previous statement with those examples. Tim "grammar nazi" O'Connor

Hello John,
I purchased a 5lb. container of Badger Aluminum Oxide Abrasive from Amazon for under $30. I'm using a Harbor Freight Blasting Cabinet and their air eraser. I have not had to replace the gloves.

Robert Bogie asked: "Is any one able to identify this NYC gondola or its Lot number?" http://www.ebay.com/itm/1950s-NYC-New-York-Central-Freight-Hopper-Cars-Vintage-Railroad-Negative-/112567520749?hash=item1a358c0ded:g:BaQAAOSwUaNZvvF2 Tough to pin this one down - the car number is barely legible, and a quick partial search at Terry Link's site of "601" as the first three numbers of the car series didn't turn up a match. A search of "604" was more productive and turned up NYC 604000-604499, Lot 681-G, but these cars had Murphy ends, which the car in the photo does not. The pattern of the side posts (10 posts, center two and third in from the ends extend below the car side) is the same. It's possible that the end facing the camera was repaired after a wreck or replaced during the rebuilding, but this is speculation. I'm hesitant to assign 100% confidence based on a clearance diagram with no supporting photograph, so I'm open to alternated IDs. Ben Hom

Harbor Freight mail order for the gloves. For only etching the styrene or resin surfaces I use Baking Soda.
