Re: Red Caboose C&S AAR 40' Boxcar Kit RC-8505-3b
Brian, this is one of a number of Red Caboose releases using the old IMWX tooling that were BOGUS... I have a whole list of them. ;-) They were done shortly after RC acquired IMWX and may have been a desperation move. :-\ Bill is correct that is the 10-0 IH 1937 IMWX tooling. But I think Bill is incorrect about the modified 1937 10-6 IH box car - the C&S did not own any of those box cars. When Red Caboose acquired the FRONT RANGE 40 foot box cars tooling, they did release a VERY ACCURATE C&S XM32E (series 1000-1799). These kits are RC-8602-x. These are the only all steel 40 foot box cars ever purchased by the C&S (in 1957) and they allowed the C&S to retire their wood sheathed box cars. I have an extra RC-8602-x kit if you would like to purchase it. They are correct in every way including 5 panel Superior door, diagonal panel roof, and 8 rung ladders. Tim O'Connor
Looking for an article on this kit if anyone recalls. I want to use this kit for a C&S car in the mid 1950's. Was this car correct out of the box or was this supposed to be an xm32c and I need to change the ends on the car to make it correct? https://www.ebay.com/itm/112968253010

Re: File extensions for saved photos
Joseph Melhorn
If you are using a PC with Windows Vista or later, you can use the built-in “Snipping Tool” to capture a portion of the screen, then save it to your hard drive, thumb drive, etc. Open a Search window (varies with the version of Windows you are using) and type “snipping tool” (without the quotes). The Snipping Tool app should appear at the top of the search window. While the search window is open and before you launch the app, you can right-click on the Snipping Tool app and pin a shortcut to it either to the Taskbar or the Start menu, for easier access in the future. Once the image is on the screen that you want to capture/save, launch the Snipping Tool and you will see a small menu (New, delay, cancel or options) select New and your screen will turn translucent grey and you will see a large + (crosshair) cursor. Maneuver the cursor to the top left point on the screen where you want to start the capture, then hold down the left mouse button and drag right and down until you’ve lassoed the image that you want to save. Click the “Save” button, select the location where you want to save the capture to, give it a name and you’re done. The default is JPG. Another tip, use the Ctrl-+ (plus) or Ctrl- (minus) (holding down the Control key while tapping either the + (plus) or - (minus) keys) to zoom in or out to adjust the size of the image you want to “capture”. If you Ctrl+ four times to zoom in, when you’re done, don’t forget to Ctrl- four times to return the screen back to normal. I have worked a number of cars with mismatched trucks along past the cutoff date of this group. As long as spring travel and wheel diameter was same it is legal in interchange. Jeff Coleman

Other than some you can scare up out of old Sunshine resin miscellaneous part castings. The beauty of those is there were often two or three each of some of the brake parts in those chunks of resin, perhaps because it didn't cost him anything to throw another one into the mold.
The resin backing around the retainer(s) is sometimes half thickness of the part itself. Many of my IMWX 10'0" boxcars that had a big ugly rectangular box-shaped molding for the triple valve now have a spare Sunshine part. Ron Merrick

The Red Caboose kit is a 10-ft high 1937 car falsely stenciled as a Modified 1937 10' 6" high car. InterMountain's offers the 10' 6" high car w/5/5 Dreadnaught ens while Branchline/now Atlas has 10' 6" high car with Improved Dreadnaught end as shown in your second link.

Does anyone know if there is a retainer valve part out there sold by itself other than Precision Scale? I know there are others out there but they are usually in a brake detail set which I'm not willing to take it from to use by itself.

There is also a photo of a nickel plate hopper with two different trucks out there. Ray Breyer probably could post to this list.

Yes, I have a George Sisk photo/Charles Winters Collection of DT&I USRA with two different trucks and a Virginian SS Bx10 photo from Bob's showing two different Andrews types, one represented by the Kadee Andrews and what appears to be a USRA type Andrews.

Bill,
For “a couple of cuts”, I am reminded of Andy Harman’s mantra: cut close, then file (sand) to fit. I presume you have a True Sander from NWSL.

Given that I use a Miter Box maybe twice a decade I ordered the Midwest item from Micro-Mark. Ordinarily I would not agonize over such a tool but I have a couple of cuts I want to be true and square and exactly where I want them. I did
manage to find some other things I "needed" to get the order up to an amount with free shipping, hah.

Re: Retainers

Earlier this week I ordered 20 packets of Precision Scale's retainer part, their #31796. Even if I inevitably drop a few, 80 parts should get me thru their transition of ownership and move further west. BTW, today was last day to send an order.

Re: Looking for a better Miter Box—Help Please
i miter quite often and so have variety of them from small to large and three different Electric Compound/Pull Miter Saws.
One of these is a 8" Craftsman (old style) which I have owned for decades. It has a special blade on it which I purchased at a Home Show. Here is a modern example... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JsCIxReqzhs Mine is older though without laser but as i recall was Made in America. NO it ain't for sale. ===== While I own plastic, wooden and aluminum mitre boxes obtained over decades of modeling...I mostly use a 12" DeWalt Variety for most of my work. But I also own a Bosch Glide Saw as I recall it being named. Which also works well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DkPhX1sLC98 ===== Each of my Mitre Saws is in a different location and each has a different sort of blade on it. Yes I will carry some work past the two of them to get to the best tool. :)) Mark PS I won't use a Table Top Saw.

As far as I know, required on all cars in interchange service; also passenger cars. Passenger cars were often mounted inside the vestibule, so don't show.
