Of water hammer Dennis, I have copies of some internal NP paperwork regarding the standpipe at the NP’s Rice’s Point facility in Duluth, MN. The facility was at the base of the surrounding hills and about 14 inches above Lake Superior's mean water level. (Yes, the inspection pits in the roundhouse were waterproofed, and yes, in times of storms if the wind was right, waves from the bay could and did wash up on the south railroad tracks of the yard. A break wall was put in to deal with it. However if you go there today, it has all changed with the freeway adjacent.) However, regarding freight car content, I think this is getting close to where the Sherriff may come in. Too nice a day here to risk jailtime. Jim Dick - Roseville.

The item is not listed as in-stock at Intermountain and they have been caught in the Chinese closure mess. Check Des Plaines, Caboose, Klein and Walthers and other vendors. Somebody out there probably still has some. I did the CMO and IC cars using Front Range bodies with the ends removed and Intermountain parts. When I first did the clinic, pre-wired 603s were hard to come by. Now you can buy them or 402s on ebay very inexpensively. You certainly want warm white or golden white. I use them for everything.

Yes. The Springer Archive at Temple Texas Railroad & Heritage Museum is endowed by Fred Springer with the idea that they don’t charge for services. Compare that with some museums that want $50 to scan a photo and up to $150 to use it in a book. Temple also has a team of volunteers who are ex railroad men and a full time archivist. It houses much of the Santa Fe Railway Historical and Modeling Society archive as well as many other collections.

David has said before that PTC frames from about 1912 to 1916 look exactly like STC underframes built beginning in 1916, when both PTC and STC changed designs. It's very confusing! :-) Tim O' "Why do you think the Ohio Cities Gas Co.car was built by Pennsylvania Tank Car? Standard Car Construction Co. (STC's predecessor) started in 1915 and didn't build cars in quantity until 1916, while high-walkway cars with the stereotypical "STC" underframe appear in the ORER entries for Pennsylvania Tank Line (PTC's leasing arm) as early as 1912. Tony’s right - even with a responsive museum to the hobby, until someone, usually a volunteer, takes the time to inventory and catalog them and then enter them in a computer system - which could be years - all these items are lost to the hobby. Good luck getting anything from the UPHS! The Newberry in Chicago has a vast collection of drawings, correspondence and even some photos - like 50,000 pieces - and they are very nice to talk to - BUT about 80% of their received material are in boxes uncataloged and hence unobtainable and have been sitting there for years. If anyone has any volunteer time on their hands - they could go to the Newberry and help do some entry work

My interest is to produce decals in O and HO for the hobby in general. I have no interest in retaining the Heinz material once scanned here. Craig Ordner at the Temple Railroad Museum in Texas is one of the conscientious and very helpful curators out there and I would recommend any worthwhile donations go there. The fairly new curator at the California State Railway Museum, Chris Rockwell is also a very responsive person and very helpful. But again any submissions will need to get in line to be cataloged and entered - and that is a very big operation those are my thoughts norm buckhart

I'm not sure that "vacuum breaker" is the proper description of the bell shaped part's function; I always thought it was the counterweight for a relief valve that prevented water hammer when the filling valve was closed. In the case of the Sheffield model in the ad, it has a spring loaded relief valve down in the pit which serves the same purpose.

Actually, Tim, they are on other designs. That big cover on the spouts of some SP water cranes acts as a vacuum breaker.

Hugh and Mike – In the 1980s Byron Rose and I visited the plant and met with the marketing manager. We were allowed to copy photos in an early Heinz history book, all the photos in the archives plus wander around the plant exterior to identify where the cars were loaded/unloaded/stored. Much of that info was published in my history sheet for the 2200 series pickle cars. All of it was published in the pickle special interest group newsletter. My files also included the 1941 plans. Because all of my research went with the sale of the business, I no longer have access to the material. Perhaps the current owner, Andrew Dahm, can be persuaded to share the info. – Al Westerfield

What Hugh describes sounds like part of the hand-out material from the national NMRA meet held in Pittsburgh in the early 1990s. Several of our Group were involved in this endeavor. The freight car material was provided with permission of the Heinz Co. and had been in their company files for years.
