Curiously both of these car types would eventually become part of the new Fruit Growers Express Fleet after 1920. The car with the Star is indeed a PRR RF reefer that was initially leased and then sold by the Pennsy to FGE. The FRL reefers eventually went to the C&EI, 931 cars IIRC and the C&EI used these cars to trade for stock and therefore ownership in the new FGE. Never seen a still photo of one of these in-service. Well, these cars were rated for 70 tons and the containers were 7 ton each plus tare weight so it would be 9.  I found an ad in the 1946 CBCyc for the containers that showed how the containers were placed in the car.  But it has been long enough that I don't remember the modeling details and, being at the lake house, I can't lay my hands on the car or the cyc until I go back north.

Based on future releases currently on the Kadee web site, they will offer at least 3 new doors representing prototype cars built in 1947-1948. 

1. Superior 7-panel doors for 6’ door openings like shown on the ATSF cars (November release) with the door placard mounted to the 2nd stiffener from the top. 

2. Superior 7-panel doors for 7’ door openings like shown on the NH cars (January 2019 release) with the door placard mounted to the 2nd stiffener from the top. 

3. Superior 7-panel doors for 6’ door openings like shown on the Southern cars (February 2019 release) with the door placard flush-mounted to the 2nd panel from the top.

I’m not privy to Kadee’s production plans beyond those shown on the web site, but it would make sense that models of prototype cars using these doors and other prototype features matching the new bodies & detail parts will be produced. This should include P&WV 1300-1399, P-S lot 5919A, built 11-48 having doors as described in 3 above in the as-built scheme with circular P&WV monogram located to the right of the door on the 2nd side panel from the end. 

If you or anyone else have paint specs for the P&WV PS-1 box cars, I’m quite sure that Sam Clarke at Kadee would like to see them. Photos I’ve seen indicate freight car red/brown sides and black ends. Roof color is difficult to discern from some black & white photos, however, an in-service photo of 1392 is clear evidence of a black roof. 

Models of the P&WV late 1950s, all-black repaints with “symbol of Service” slogans should also be offered. Hope this helps to answer your question.

To clarify the Ten Post smooth bottom gons are the AAR gon good for the Accurail kit.

Here is the MKT model I have done using the Speedwitch kit. Paint is Badger Modelflex MKT Chrome Yellow applied w/Badger 155 AB at 20 psi. I will use this on the MKT War Emergency car I am building too.

Note the square brake staff on the "B" end.

Frankly I do not have the courage or will to weather my model to the extent the prototype photo Tim shared but will use it for pointers.

I WOULD buy the image if I could FREAKING figure out how and if I thought it was worth buying. Based on the crappy web image, what assurance do I have that the image for sale is worth anything? Because the one on the web isn’t worth paying for.  The C&O HS web pages have nothing, nada, squat that would help me figure out how to do this… so other than some text at the archives images sub page saying you can buy images, it is not readily apparent HOW to buy them or even that the specific image on the web is available for sale…

Bruce, looking at the HV car, note that the bracket is mounted on one of the vertical channels on the end of the car.  I think that the horizontal flat is bent upwards and secured into the flat of the channel.  The two legs of the angle thus created are joined by the diagonal strap.  Shouldn’t be too tough to make, and with the vertical leg fastened into the interior of the channel it should be quite sturdy.
 
It’s NOT fastened to the very narrow end sill of the car.
 
You can’t zoom in to get the detail because the C&OHS would like you to buy a print, which will be exceedingly detailed.  I’ll forgo my usual rant about actually supporting RR Historical Websites by PAYING for the sharp image.  It’s not all available for free, you know.

There are a couple of images at the C&O HS site, although they unfortunately become very pixelated with any zoom applied … and it isn’t clear to me how to get a decent image.  Go to  https://archives.cohs.org/ and enter 28972 or 28786 in the Number search box. 


Or, take a look at this image of the original Hocking Valley car from the Barriger. The support for the air hose appears to be unchanged in the rebuilt cars.


These photos show what appears to be a flat (horizontal) strap that is undermounted on the end of the car with a short vertical segment, combined with a diagonal metal strap from the top of the bracket to a few inches up the end brace.  
 

Among the challenges for the model will be fastening that part to the very narrow endsill of the car. Drilling that part is possible, since I added DA sill steps, but it will be a challenge and then the pin on the part will be the only thing holding the whole hot mess together. I may try to provide the brake pipe back to the bolster to add some additional bracing. The good news is that the HiTech brake hoses are very light, and do not transmit any force back to the attachment point of the bracket, but regardless, this bracket is looking like a scratch building project.

Photo? If it's the cast style the Zamac part Kadee makes should be pretty close. If a bent strap, the PSC part I did the pattern for (I forget what number they gave it) is almost universal.

First, I have airbrushed the air hoses with Floquil paint and not problems. Also, I have been using Formula 560 Canopy Glue and have never lost a HiTech air hose.

I thought Denny's description of drilling out the hole for the air hose in the P{SC bracket was way too involved until I got out the small piece of paper that I keep with my air hoses which reminds me how to do it each time. Keep in mind that I have a small drill press which helps but it reads:

Use needle nose pliers to insert bracket in the side of machinist vise to hold it perpendicular. Hold a piece of wood under the drilling area to keep bracket from bending.

Hole in air hose bracket:
1. Drill dimple with #77 carbide drill bit but don’t drill through [the carbide drill bit won't flex]
2. Drill through with #77 regular drill bit
3. Finish by drilling through with #74 drill bit

Hole for bracket in bottom of car is #73.

Since their inception, I have used the HiTech hoses in wholesale numbers for years in a variety of installations and to my knowledge I have never had one fall off, or get dislodged. However, all -all- have been mechanically held in place by PSC hangers, drilled holes in styrene blocks, etc., secured with tiny drops of Barge cement or thick ACC. The only cements that I know are likely to hold these soft rubber supple hoses in place for ordinary use without mechanical enclosure are the contact cements, notably Barge Cement. ACC will not do it.

The PSC brake hose hangers are beautiful, but can be a bit frustrating in the drilling-out the hole for the hose itself. I made a crude wood jig to hold the hangers vertically in a vise so that I could easily drill them out to #74, the diameter th beyondat I found best to accommodate the HiTech hoses. Starting out with a #79 pilot hole as Nelson Moyer has suggested, is indeed very good practice. There is an ample dimple to help with centering. I usually will drill out a dozen or more hangers at a time, taking no more than about ten minutes or so in the process. Using a drill press will save a lot of drills- for a variety of reasons.

A side note: The PSC hangers came about directly from the conversations and expressed needs from those on this very list. It was simply amazing then (and now) that not a single HO brake hose hanger was available beyond the esoteric Kadee hangers designed for their fine log cars, and the hangers included in the CalScale kits.

Dennis Storzek then drew up, machined, and generously provided the fine pattern for the PSC casting that we now enjoy. I negotiated with PSC for development of the castings and the resulting agreement to include the part into their standard line.

Mont Switzer and I underwrote minimum production (taking in return- pleasure and product!). I tried every rhetorical trick I knew to persuade PSC to core out the hole for the hose itself, but they felt that it simply was too small in that location to be feasible. The hangers were at the time designed to accept the the brass PSC hoses, i.e. 0.020” #76, but with ordinary care, they readily accommodated the slightly large hole for the excellent HiTech hoses. They are a great combination, and the barely crossed facing hoses look terrific (that is, terrific!) when cars ALSO have scale distances between facing striker plates (29” Accumate Proto -31”Kadee Scale), this -in turn- only enabled by scale couplers.

This lovely scene of scale relationships is easily destroyed by the interfering presence of the magnetic glad hands, and in this regard, I clip these off flush, each and every one of them.

Before we crowd our bandwidth with messages about the gondola list, let me say that when I dug the piece out I saw that it was actually a list of Sunshine cars, but forgot to say so when I pushed the send key. The closest to the Accurail cars are the 10-post, smooth bottom AAR cars that lead page 2.

This is really a useful piece of information, and belongs in our files (if it isn't there already).
