I found this new 1942 Miner Handbrake kit on the Arrowhead Models website. I have no affiliation with them and just wanted to let others know of it availability. Looks to be the one as modeled on their Hopper Cars.

According to an N&W equipment diagram I found in the Archives, this is an American Car and Foundry Co. corrugated end.

Ray Breyer's article on the Accurail 36' DS boxcar prototypes had another picture of an SSW car with these ends and I've got a photo of them applied to N&W class SJ or SK 40' stock cars.  There are also general arrangement drawings showing them being applied to N&W class BI 36' boxcars.

Based on all the emails, I decided to count the hobby shop in the basement. I shouldn’t have.  I have built approximately 20 resin cars from the usual sources, F&C Sunshine, Yarmouth Speedwitch. I stopped counting at 120 unbuilt kits. I’m a slower builder and I buy them when they come out since I know they won’t be around forever. Being 45 I hope I can build for another 25-30 years.

 

In addition to ones I’ve built I’ve purchased built cars sold but others on this list including Clark P, and Hugh G.

 

My first car was a Westerfield G22B and a Container load.  Decaling the Billboard PRR scheme and all the decals on the containers was probably the most tedious part.

The spotting feature needed to tell the two apart is out of the shot.  The way to tell the two classes apart in a side shot is the center panel.  Since the Class GRA is longer, the center panel is a rectangle vice the square of the Class GR.

GR or GRA. No way to tell within the context of the image. It also appears that there might be some sort of cargo bridging the gap between cars, explaining why 2 PRR composite goes are in SF at the same time and side by side.

Can anyone give me further information about these two cars?  SLSF 152203 was a 40' double sheathed end door auto loader in series SLSF 152000-152228.  It was photographed unloading a DUKW onto a Boston & Albany flat at the San Francisco Port of Embarkation during WWII.  I wrote about the book, Gateway to Victory, back in 2015 https://northbaylines.blogspot.com/2015/12/san-francisco-port-of-embarkation-sfpoe.html 
I've looked through the Sunshine all time list and associated flyers and came up with earlier and later cars, but not the 152000 series. 
 
The B&A flat has to be one of the 186 cars remaining in the 16000-16399 series.  The build date and capacity eliminate the other B&A flats listed in the Jan 45 ORER.  The Canada Southern Railway website lists the cars as members of Lot 300-F built in 1912.  The 4-13 build date in the photo is consistent with an extended delivery from a late 1912 order. 
 
I would like to model both of these cars.

Roger Hinman did a fine presentation on steel NYC flat cars at the Chicagoland and Cocoa Beach RPMs. I can’t find my handout but there were about 2500 similar flats installed on NYC Lines in the Teens. I’m slowly working on adapting a Tichy flat with new sides. The prototypes had fishbelly side and center sills. 

I’ve got nuthin’ on the SLSF automobile boxcar.

I am particularly fond of SEM Trim Black designed for use
of external automotive trim. It is solvent-based and is
available in rattle cans and quarts. It dries to a satin
finish. I use it for steam locomotives among other things.
The rattle cans are great for painting small items without
setting up and cleaning the air brush.

It can be handled soon after application but the instructions
say to allow 2 days for complete curing, I presume to achieve
the hardness level needed for the exterior of a vehicle.

The rattle can puts out lots of paint so use short bursts
while moving it fast.

Like lacquer, it can be sanded. Many a boiler has been sanded
then over sprayed with clear which concealed the fine scratches.

My former LHS owner had a few of the N scale PFE reefer kits when they were available.  He said somebody brought in one that had been put together, and the guy was complaining that the brakewheel didn't fit.  He'd cut the brakewheel plus its surrounding sprue off as one piece, and tried to glue it on the car.

Of course, an HO guy could have just as easily done the same thing.....

Richard, I'm looking at the kit now.  It builds a double deck S-40-6, which is a 36' car with wood roof so I suspect a lot of the parts are IM/RC, from the SP S-40-5 kit.  The roof and ends are, based on visual comparison to an SP S-40-5 that's on the layout, .  The instructions say 'from several different model manufacturers'.  The trucks are the Accurail "Bettendorf" with widely spaced springs, but a number of manufacturers use those.  The ends and letterboards are painted and lettered.  The sides and floors are unpainted, and definitely not from the IM kit.  The sides are not from the IM Santa Fe stock car models, and not from the Proto Mather model, both of which are 40' cars, again based on comparison with cars on my layout.  That's about all I can tell.

Andy's note below reminded me of one of our model railroading god-fathers, Mr William Clouser, once of the Saint Louis neighborhood.  Respected scratch builder and professional model builder, he authored in the March 1959 Model Railroader an article on painting models using an air brush.  His favorite primer?  Auto finish lacquer from an appropriate store.  I believe he worked with a gallon size decanting into smaller containers for convenience.  Most of us would not need so much.  His article has been a lifetime reference for me.

      I, too, am interested in the Boston & Albany flat car and will look to see if more can e found on it while I'm 
up here in New England as I doubt much more would be found when in Sleesburg than you will find there in 
Lovettsville. While I have no idea why the lettering is so far to the right end of the flat car I wonder of the stake
pocket between the "T' and "O" of "Boston" is in the middle of the car which would ell us that the car had eleven
stake pockets per side and also make it fairly easy ti make a drawing of the car side at least as far as the rivet
layout is concerned. Any thoughts on this?

As much as I would have like to see you get into N Scale, especially at that time, I think you were very wise NOT do so. With a few notable exceptions, it seems to me that N Scalers prefer RTR cars rather than kits. Does Intermountain even  do (Steam era of course!) kits anymore?  And that is part of the reason that I didn't say that I wish you had produced N scale kits, secondly, and no criticism intended here, but your focus always seemed to be HO. Likewise, just as an example, while I wouldn't mind seeing Accurail release some of their products in 'N'ormal scale, but it's highly unlikely. That's just not their focus either, and again, that's fine, I accept that as just how things are.
 
I do somewhat regret that I did not buy any of your kits, but I knew that I would be very unlikely to built them, just because I don't have the time, tools and currently, the patience your (or the other excellent resin kits) products require. I do have to say that I did always look at your ads though, if for no other reason, to see what I was missing out on!
