Does everyone realize that "Flat" black was not a color used by railroads... it is a color used by modelers...   Linseed oil paints were naturally semigloss to glossy... but weathered to flat...

To be clear, the wheels noted by Ray are horizontal (vertical shaft.)  There is no evidence that these cars ever got vertical wheel brake gear.

Per the Rock's diagram book sheet for these cars (dated 8/8/1949), 141000-142499 had Universal brake wheels, and 142500-142999 had Ureco.

This is second hand, and possibly not 100% accurate, but in outline, this is the story:

 

The layout was built in the basement of an RPI dorm.  RPI has been renovating dorms for some time, and it’s now time for them to do this dorm,  RPI is very aware of the significance of the Club both to the hobby and also its value as a historical representation of railroads in the Albany/Lake George/Champlain/Vermont area.  Tim’s characterization as one of the best model railroads in the world isn’t an exaggeration.  It’s easily on a part with the La Mesa club in San Diego, though that is probably larger.

 

The renovation involves a complete rehabilitation of the dorm, including the entire plumbing system, meaning that they will be ripping out all the exposed-over-the-layout plumbing.  While I personally think it would be >possible< for a contractor to erect scaffolding over the layout (with the backdrops cut down), I am sure that the extra costs for construction would be very high, and undoubtedly the layout would suffer damage.

 

RPI had promised the club that they would provide a new facility elsewhere suitable for the layout, and that they would assist the move out of the basement into that facility before the renovations were to begin.  As it turns out the timing didn’t work out, so instead, the layout is to be disassembled in sections, crated, and warehoused until such alternate location materializes.

 

Whether that can ever happen and what shape the sections will be in when uncrated . . . no one really knows.

 

I’ve had the pleasure of operating on that layout twice.  It is one of the best working layouts of that scale I’ve ever had the chance to operate.  In my experience, everything WORKED.  Locomotives, switches, power, rolling stock, everything. And it a visual treat, everything looked good and appropriate – even the paper mockups of buildings not built yet.  I’ve operated on some small layouts that have worked as well, but RPI is exceptional for the simple scale of the layout.

 

As Tim said, it’s very sad to see this layout go away.  We can only hope for it to be resuscitated at some future time.

Seeking Help On An SP Auto Car

I posted this question a short time back an it is p mb e of the very few times that I did not receive a response.  I am doing a Sunshine kit of a Southern Pacific A-50-16 40' auto car.  It has been in my pipeline for a while.

This is a good thing as I assembled  the body with a flat panel roof.  I recently learned that the car needed a diagonal panel roof and Andy Carlson came to my rescue.  I remember receiving some information earlier that the kit under frame was not correct.  Can anyone direct me to some accurate information an the under frame (cross members and appliance) layout.

I hope to have better luck this time.

It seems to me that many moons ago MDC made an AAR-style truck with the journal box doors removed to represent a conversion to roller bearings.   I needed a pair for a project I did (a Conrail GSC depressed center flat car).  If I remember correctly, I found a pair on True-Line trains website and got them thru them.   They aren't there now though....

Regarding the use of MDC underframes to donate to MP steel 50' double door cars. this is really a simple swap.  The underframe is narrower and shorter than the Proto car, so I used shims on the sides and ends.  I added basic brake detail and rodding, and changed the angle of the crossmembers so the ends are hidden behind the sidesill.  One reason this is necessary is that the reinforcement under the door for both series of MP cars is shorter and narrower than on the model.  All cars had steel grid roofwalks -- I used a Kadee walk on the 88400 series car that stayed in freight service but haven't done that on the express cars yet.  The 88150 series express cars had Commonwealth express trucks with no snubber and plain bearings.  This is the Athearn BX express truck.  It will need at least one Kadee washer.

The underframes I used had a bit of a bow to them, so I glued .250 square tube to them to straighten them out.  The photos illustrate the trimming of the sidesill reinforcement.

Yes the late Paige Porter worked ay MDC during that period and Brian Leppert tooled the molds and was ordered by his boss at MDC to make the board junctions more prominent.

Both shots of T&P 40061 and T&P 40450 clearly show the transverse air reservoir, which the cars were built with.  In the mid-fifties most or all of the cars were rebuilt with steel-grid running boards and a heavier sidesill reinforcement under the door.  They had Youngstown doors as built, but most or all got five-panel Superior doors as part of the rebuild.  The 40000-40499 got National B-1 trucks as built, the 40500-40999 had Scullin trucks, later mostly replaced with ASF A-3.  Somewhere I have a photo of a car with one of each.

I'm building a couple of these right now.  The ends are black, and sides are an oxide shade of red, for the original T&P paint scheme.  After 1961, cars got an all-over boxcar red with various iterations of the buzzsaw, with some also having the diamond.

I cut the doors down from Kadee, by cutting six scale inches above the topmost rib and filing down the area just above the topmost rib.  The Kadee doors are a bit fragile, I cemented a piece of .060 on the back of the door, wide enough to just barely clear the door opening.

The Spring 2000 issue of the MPHS Eagle had good coverage of these cars, article by Ed Hawkins.
