You might also look up any dealers in compressed gases.  I worked at a tennis club in Portland OR as the life guard /pool guardian for a summer, and we had bottled chlorine delivered to us more or less monthly to maintain enough in the pool water to kill germs. I'm not sure what other industrial uses there were for chlorine.  I know paper plants consumed a lot, especially for the non-kraft (brown) kinds of paper, but those deliveries went in the 11k gallon ICC 105 pressure insulated cars like the ones Atlas and Kadee make in HO.

BTW, I grew up in Providence RI and attended Henry Barnard School which sat inside the NH's curve that went through the station.  In 3rd grade, I probably spent more time watching trains than the lessons on the board.  Summers were in Matunick, and my Dad would commute down to Kingston often, where we would pick him up after work in Providence.  I remember being cautioned to get behind something at the station when the Merchants Limited came flying through at 60+ with two DL109's on the point.

Much later, I worked on contract at CL&P in New Britain for about 6 months - I was a Service Bureau employee, back when SBC was part of IBM.  I con't recall doing much railfanning while I was there.

Yeah, there's a siding on the maps in New Britain that's either for New Britain Water Works, or in later years, City of New Britain storeyard. Unfortunately, it didn't quite fit on the layout. It makes me want to go see if I can squeeze it in, though. At the very least, I can have the cars come to the yard, "to be delivered" at a later date. And they'll be on through trains to Hartford, etc.

We've been discussing this on the North Shore club list. Stoneham and many other towns in
Massachusetts had shoe factories, including nationally famous brands. There were also many
tanneries.

Someone said the animal hides/skins came in by SHIP from overseas, and the B&M transported
them from the port of Boston to Stoneham and other towns in single sheathed box cars that were
used exclusively for that traffic.

You don't WANT to know how they were packed in the ships' holds. OMG!

I showed the consist doc to several people today. One repeated question was the cars that showed SKINS as their contents. One suggestion was the load was to be used as sausage casings and another suggestion was to make pork rinds (assuming the load was pork skins). Both cars were going to Stoneham MA on the B&M. Anyone have more insight into this?

if you were to stand at this location today, the Crescent City Connection, formerly the Greater New Orleans Bridge, would be right behind you.  You're looking geographically almost directly south, which at this point is upriver.  At the time of this photo, the T&P passenger station would be to your right and a few blocks away, and the L&N passenger station would be several blocks behind you, at the foot of Canal.  You're at the foot of the warehouse district, and the main tracks would be on the other side of those warehouses.  If you looked across the river you might be able to see the T&NO trackage on the Algiers side.

Is this the same type of C&O depressed center flat car? It was not covered in our 1945 cars redo of the 1937 cars book. Chessie Sys diag book has it built in 1971 and was Class F-26. C&O 80990 and 91 were similar.

Bob,

No blasphemy here. You have up-graded a post war Varney box car to a level good for at least 40 years later.

To me that is “Model Railroading” at its best. U remember well the post war era (born in 43) and always felt the Varney box cars were way ahead of the others. Easy o assemble, pieces did not falloff nor did roof ribs slip out-of-place, door guides stayed in place and they looked very good, not only for the 40’s and 50’s but till today depending on your nit level.

This may border on blasphemy, but I recently had some fun upgrading this Varney steel boxcar "legacy model" with new running boards, ladders, grabs, stirrups, handbrake, etc. -- as well as some paint correction on the door. Best of all -- it even resembles the MoPac prototype (if you don't look too closely).   

 

Those ads were very enticing in their day, and Varney's steel boxcars have good curb-appeal even today.

Some more information which might be of interest, from the C&O equipment diagram dated 1956:

 

Cars were numbered 80950 through 80959, built by Greenville Steel Car Co.  in November and December 1941.

 

They had completely flat wood planked decks made of “2 and 3/8 inch square edge oak”.

 

Length over strikers was 56 feet 8 and ¾ inches. 

 

Actually, Carl Shaver's FREIGHT CAR EQUIPMENT OF THE CHESAPEAKE & OHIO RAILWAY, AUGUST 1, 1937 (revised ed., 1989), does show these cars, on pages 192 and 193.  He notes there, that the last cars were retired in 1975.

 

About the well hole flats,  Al Kresse mentioned also that some them went to the NY Central – Carl’s book says these were car numbers 80976 and 80980, sold to the NYC in Feb. 1950.
