Actually, it appears that very few of the 1st series of cars were even built with arch bar trucks. I have photos including a builders photo of 569091, built 5-24 with 2D-F8 trucks. And yes, I have seen evidence of truck changes in far less time than 6 years. Remember, these were the "new" flagship cars, and if cars in the same series were getting newer trucks, it is not at all unreasonable to think that the PRR might have switched the trucks out on these cars, even within months of their being built. Note too that the car Claus mentioned, 570862 was built in 10-24... so newer than the one above. Not sure what was happening there or if the arch bars are a temporary replacement on this car.


In this case, lacking photo evidence of arch bars on X29s past 1932 as the extreme date, I wouldn't model them that way, any time later than about 1930, unless modeling that specific car.

OK, but what is the evidence that the PRR bothered to swap out the arch-bar trucks within ~6 years of construction on the early X29s that were so equipped?  Unless somebody has a cache of photos that I have not seen, the evidence into and through the 1930s is minuscule relative to the number of cars built.

HPT&D 405 is not one of the tall ARA boxes; rather, it is an ex-N&W B-7 (rebuilt from their class BS) with a 1920s Viking peaked roof (not the Viking Corrugated roof of the 1930s).

Here are few photos of the interesting cars. It looks like their doors were replaced in the late 1940's/early 1950's. Maybe that is when the broad light stripe was added. I am not sure if the stripe was white or cream. The original door is very interesting to me. The attached blurb is from one of my Richard Prince books, probably ACL or SAL. Ten of the cars were sold to West India Fruit.

If I can sort our the stripe color, I might do my Sunshine model in that scheme on one side, original scheme and door on the other side.

CB&Q 20500-20509
 This is a rara avis! In a series of only ten, a photo is an unexpected treat. These cars, built 1941-1942,  have inset side sills with brackets supporting the wider side sheathing. All other of the many 40-6 and 50-6 steel cars built new by the CB&Q have side sheets flush with the side sills. Maybe the 20500-20509 series are rebuilds? There is no note of this in equipment diagram but that they were built by CB&Q, Galesburg, IL. The reweigh date on #20507 looks like 5-7x? If somebody has more definitive information on this small series it would be great to hear from you!

If I recall correctly the Westerfield parts model the locks used on some drop bottom gons and the shape of the mounting bracket is different than for a hopper. The Bowser parts were likely designed for one of their hopper kits. You might also be able to use the hopper doors from the Accurail twin or triple hopper detail sprue, available at accurail.com. those doors have the locks molded on.

Might be possible to combine the end door from a Proto boxcar with a Proto 50' single door body.

As a general practice, 50' single door cars with end doors were very rare, and the 1942 build date suggests something specifically built for a defense plant contract.  The hoist suggests something heavy like aircraft engines.

This car is probably well documented by Burlington specialists, so I hope one enlightens us.

We did the F28, F29, and F33 on PRRPro recently. Here's some brief information about the three kits you list, which overlap two of these projects...


F29 - 20 cars, 2 groups of 10, 1927 and 1929. Excellent models of both series available in HO from Railworks. F&C 8171 model covers the first group with 3F-F1 Kiesel trucks and 8170 covers the second group with 3F-F2 buckeye trucks.


F33 - as noted 16 cars, built in 2 lots, 1938 and 1942, with 3F-F2 and 3F-F3 Buckeye trucks (no real visible difference. I built the F&C kit. Here is a brief review. The body is copy cast from an early brass car that was billed as an F33, but which in reality is a very similar C&O car. If you care, you will need to sand the "bumps" off the upper decks as they were not present on the F33. I did that and duplicated the rivets with Archers. I removed the faux wooden decking in the well and replaced it with laser cut decks by AMB. Those are beautiful, but the removal was a nightmare.... I might pass if I thought about doing it again. The trucks... ah the trucks... all three of these cars are going to use F&C's resin trucks. I tried to find metal trucks for the F33 that worked, to no avail. Railworks did make these trucks but I couldn't find a set. I ended up breaking the resin ones, and then gluing them together and using them. I also discovered that the center screw mount would not work only after setting the trucks up to do that, but there is an offset mount and I HIGHLY recommend you use it. As always with F&C, there are some additional details to add to improve the looks of the car. I do like how the model came out, but it was more work than the simple kit implied and, of course, it weighs...next to nothing.


F34 - 3 cars built, 2 in 1938 and the 3rd in 1943.


So, for shear numbers, the F29 is the winner, but either he F29 or F33 give you a workable model that can handle some unique loads.
