Mike - the problem with this approach is that unless Matthew sets his profile to make his email address visible to members of the group, it does not appear possible to respond directly to him. I don't know if it is group IO or firefox, but clicking on "reply to sender" (or even "reply to group") gives a menu that steers you to email applications that you might not use.

I love this Ambroid car (one of my layout as we speak), but have always wondered about the passenger diaphragm on one end. Were these cars designed/equipped for occasional operation on passenger trains, or was the diaphragm there to provide protected entrance and egress if the car was coupled -parked or underway- to a related bunk/dormitory/WU official car?

I assume John's article inspired the F&C kit. It is pretty good basic kit but room for many enhancements that I will post soon.

Not a D&H maven but there was an article in November 1987 RMC on the prototype with a plan by Chuck Yungkurth showing all three ends, and the with an underframe plan. The December issue the same year had a how to model the cars article. Don Burn

I am stuck however doing the underframe as I am not confident how to proceed. There are some parts that I think are meant to be Crossbearers but the instruction as usual are not helpful. I am curious if there are any D&H mavens here that may have information on the prototype. In his blog post Ted Culotta said he thought there may have been a RMC article by John Nehrich. Can anyone verify this? I plan to post model photos soon. Bill Welch

Western Pacific Model and Decal Guide
Garth Groff <sarahsan@...>
Friends,
Many years ago I compiled a list of HO freight car and caboose models suitable for the Western Pacific, Sacramento Northern and Tidewater Southern up to 1958. I long ago lost that list, but member R.J. Dial had a copy, and made many comments, corrections and additions. It is now revised and updated with decal suggestions. Additional material is welcome, but I reserve the right decide what is appropriate. The list is attached for your enlightenment and approval. I believe as an attachment it will be automatically saved to our group's files section. If not, I will eventually post a copy there with any changes the group wants. Yours Aye, Garth Groff

Built one if these in 1960 or 1961 while in high school. Still have it (packed away after downsizing). Have to dig it out when we get back from FL.

That is because they were narrow-gauge cars used on the narrow gauge parts of the Denver & Rio Grande Western in Colorado. Two of them still exist; what was once 301 is on the Cumbres & Toltec; the former 302 is at the Colorado Railroad Museum.

Western Union Telegraph Co., Outfit Car No. 301 (32’)
Western Union Telegraph Co., Outfit Car No. 302 (32’)
Western Union Telegraph Co., Outfit Car No. 303 (32’)
Interesting they were so much shorter than the one being discussed.

By the early 1980's it had been moved to the East Deerfield Yard where it sat for some additional years. From there it disappeared but whether it was simply moved again to some unknown location or scrapped I cannot state. Sorting through a large box of older negatives and photos here in recent weeks I ran across a photo of it taken in Greenfield these many years ago. I have always felt the Ambroid model was a fairly good rendition of this unusual piece of equipment. Perhaps I should find the photo again, scan it an post it here."
