Interesting. The Morgan's Louisiana & Texas boxcar has a total of six truss rods instead of the usual four.
When one looks at the weight capacity is is obvious why. It is a 100,000 lb. capacity car in an era of
40,000 lb. cars if not less.

Do you know the builder of these cars? That would indicate which library is most likely to have information. For instance, Pullman Library of the Illinois Railway Museum has a majority of the drawings from Pullman and Standard Steel & Car Company, among others, while a different library in St. Louis has most of the American Car & Foundry drawings.

one of my friends is modeling the early 20th century and is interested to build a model of one of the series of 1000 cars of 1902-built Reading wooden coal hoppers #60000 - 60999. I have a picture of #61171 after rebuilding in 1921 (and renumbering, seemingly), but likely it would be wrong to post it here as it is a book scan. I could email it, though.
Does anyone have information of these cars or can point me to some? No matter if original or modernized configuration.

New Kadee Ordering Policies

I've been reading through the Kadee newsletter that came with my latest pre-ordered freight car, and found they have introduced some new policies that will affect ordering in the future.

Kadee has announced that their pre-order program will end on 1 December 2019. From then on all RTR cars will be released in limited quantities. Availability will be announced via an electronic newsletter, and there will be no prior announcements.

Instead of prior orders, Kadee is opening a "standing order" program for which cars will be automatically sent and billed to a subscriber's account: https://kadee.com/standingorder.htm . Each subscriber will provide Kadee a profile of their preferences, and will have five days after the email newsletter is sent to decline (or increase) the monthly purchase.
I note that one can receive the newsletter without joining the subscription program (I did, as I don't buy many cars these days). Apparently any excess cars will be sold on a 1st come, 1st serve basis to non-standing order newsletter subscribers until stock is gone.

How this will affect the ability of our dwindling number local hobby dealers to buy and stock Kadee freight cars is not explained. That is likely covered by some separate program announced just to dealers.

O.K. I know we aren't supposed to criticize a manufacturer's business practices in this group, so I'm not, and hope the thread I'm launching here doesn't get out of hand. I'm just calling this to everyone's attention, and you can decide for yourselves whether you want to do business this way. It will be interesting to see if this is a success for Kadee. If so, we may well see other manufacturers adopt this method.

Apex Tri-lok, Blaw-Knox, Kerrigan, and the redesigned version (late-1953 to early 1954) of the U.S. Gypsum running board & brake step were all rectangular open-grid design with a similar overall appearance. The use of Blaw-Knox running boards & brake steps was relatively uncommon on PS-1 box cars with N&W being the largest user by far, possibly the only user. 

The construction & design of each type was different as explained & pictured in RP CYC Volume 16. Specifically Blaw-Knox used twisted rods for the crosswise members vs. Apex & the later-version U.S. Gypsum having flat bars for the crosswise members. 

The Kadee rectangular open-grid running board & brake step represents an Apex Tri-lok design, which has been available since the inception of their 40’ PS-1 box car model first released 22 years ago in June 1997. In HO scale the differences of the others become subtle such that Blaw-Knox & others of the rectangular-grid design are all represented by the same Kadee running board & brake step on their models. A. Knabb & Co. Cooperage Car. This car is a sister to the AM Welti & Bros., 60 feet long, 10'6" high.

Little Rock Cooperage Co. It is very similar to the HD Williams Cooperage Co car.

The first is from the A M Welti Bros., out of Cleveland, OH. This is a 65' car, that is approximately 13' 6" tall, and 9" 6" wide. It has a unique three way, off center door. It opens on the top, the center, and the bottom. The indication is that there are floors in this car, otherwise there would be no reason for the hinge sets.

The second is the Hutchinson Cooperage Car. This is a 60' car, that is 11' 2" tall, and 10' wide. It is one of the few monster boxcars that existed west of the Mississippi and could not travel to the East because tunnels were not possible with it.

Charlie, I disagree. Here is all the definition of "woodenware" as it pertains to freightcars that you need. What it has in common with furniture is it won't "nest" so is light in weight for it's volume, necessitating an oversize freightcar. Carriages were another commodity that needed oversize cars, as were automobiles when they came along, and eventually lent their mane to the oversize cars.

The Master Car Builders Association and later ARA and AAR mechanical designations recognized these special purpose cars:

XF was an oversize furniture car
XAF was an Automobile and Furniture car. Remember these codes were adopted ca. 1910 and automobiles had become a major commodity by that time,
FB was a Barrel rack Flat. The dsignation was later reused for a Bulkhead Flat.
