And More St. Louis RPM photos

I've gotten my photos from Collinsville uploaded and captioned. More coverage of the show and less of the individual models, which seems to complement the photos already listed here. Take a look at : Enjoy, Dick Harley Laguna Beach, CA

Kadee New Release [was: RPM St Louis 2019 Photos]
Garth Groff <sarahsan@...>
Friends,
Back in June when I last ordered from Kadee there was a teaser on their web site saying a new type of car would be announced, I think, at the St. Louis RPM. I've been searching their site, and find nothing further on a new car. Does anybody know what they showed at St. Louis? Yours Aye, Garth Groff

Early Steel Hopper

Aha! That hint and a quick search turned up an article in the February 1906 American Engineer and Railroad Journal, pp. 52-53.
https://books.google.com/books?id=lEmxCGAbOSEC&pg=PA52 https://books.google.com/books?id=lEmxCGAbOSEC&pg=PA53 "The car is of the hopper type, of 80,000 lbs. nominal capacity, and was designed and built during the latter part of 1897 under the direction of Mr. L. H. Turner, superintendent of motive power of the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie Railroad, by the Youngstown Bridge Company, Youngstown, Ohio." David Thompson

Thanks, Dick - lots of great stuff!
Great seeing you - and everyone else who recognized me at Collinsville! (I'd say that I recognized, but too often I don't, could never be a salesman). If anyone missed me or forgot to inquire - we can be reached at "Pullman Library" <irmpulllib at gmail.com> (removing the "at" with the correct symbol, etc.) At 12:29 PM 7/29/2019, you wrote: I try to put stuff on my SmugMug site that would be useful to other folks. Re: Funaro 1932 CP Boxcar ( freight car paint schemes)
Dick Harley
I am not a regular reader of this (or any other) internet list. So my apologies for the slow response. I noticed in the past week or so a lot of viewers to my UP Freight Car painting clinic on SmugMug, and wondered what generated the interest. Bob Webber clued me in when I talked to him at Collinsville last weekend. Chuck Seemann asked whether that presentation was available in printed form, and I sympathize with him about reading on a computer display. I have not printed that info, but Chuck or one of his friends could. Any of the pages of that presentation can be downloaded in full resolution by clicking the down-arrow "Download" icon at the lower right. You can download whichever pages are of interest and then print them yourself. You can also buy images directly from SmugMug, if you want, by clicking the "Buy Photos" button. I have nothing to do with that process, but I hear they do a good job. I try to put stuff on my SmugMug site that would be useful to other folks. The top level URL is: You can navigate the site from there. I have not optimized the site for mobile devices, so a full computer display will probably give you a better 'experience.' I'll get my photos from Collinsville 2019 up there in the next day or two. Cheers, Dick Harley Laguna Beach, CA

Re: Photo: Cyclotron Load On C&NW Heavy Duty Flat Car 48053
I just returned from the Santa Fe Railway Historical & Modeling Society Convention. A speaker at that convention was Eric Brock, a professional railroader who is very experienced working with shippers on loads. In response to a question about cutting holes in the steel deck of any flat car he says in was a forbidden practice. Sometimes happened but that usually was followed by a notice to the shipper to stop doing it. Welding braces, tie-down structures, etc. was common and approved.

David There is also a picture of this car on page 68 of Pittsburgh and Lake Eire by Harold H. McLean (Golden West Books 1980). The author states that the car was either built by P&LE in the McKees Rocks Shops or by Youngstown Bridge Company Don Ford Cameron MO

Re: InterMountain at Collinsville RPM displaying. . .
Dick Harley
Let me make a couple corrections to Bill's message, lest people have the wrong idea. Several HO PFE pre-prodction wood reefers were shown at Collinsville by InterMountain. The models being produced are on their website: I did the artwork for these cars, so I think the lettering is pretty correct. As best I know, delivery of the production assembled models is not yet firm. I will be getting some undec kit parts in bulk for myself, and I did offer to provide a few to Bill Welch, if he wanted, because he is a long-time friend. I AM NOT GETTING IN THE BUSINESS OF PROVIDING UNDEC TERRY WEGMANN PARTS OR KITS. If you want such parts or kits, you need to contact InterMountain to see what they are able/willing to provide. Cheers, Dick Harley Laguna Beach, CA

InterMountain at Collinsville RPM displaying. . .
. . .PFE reefers built up from kits tooled by the late Terry Wegman. Not sure which ones will be available or schemes but these kits were designed to model the PFE's -18, -19 and -21. Dick Harley told me that eventually undec. kits will be available from him.
While begging IM's Gene Fusco not to stop manufacturing the IMWX/Red Caboose 1937 AAR molding he cut me off to point out one of their new releases using this tooling, so hope rings. . . Bill Welch

I plan to buy the new trucks, as I can't see a way to get the old wheel sets out and replace them with ones having metal wheels.

Dan,

Ah, fussy trucks! I had one of the metal cranes picked up second-hand as a youngster. It had some non-sprung metal trucks, which I now gather might have been a substitution. They were always loose, and the crane tripped over everything it went around a curve. I never got the monster completely put together, as there were no instructions. Being zamac, eventually the boom pivot cracked, and it was in my junk box when I sold off all my HO stuff when I went off to college. I think I still have the smaller hook in my parts bin somewhere. Yours Aye, Garth Groff

Trivial point, but there was at least one additional version … after the crane was released as a plastic offering there were two versions … with and without the stack for the steam boiler. The stackless version supposedly representing a crane converted to Diesel power, though such cranes usually had external vents for the radiators needed to cool the engines, and the Athearn crane’s cab remained unmodified.
