Evidently it is not intuitively obvious to the casual observer…. It wasn’t to me either.

The instruction does not have to be like a Rosanna Danna Danna opening line in tone….”You stupid !@$@#)_%” .....but rather more “Here’s how you do it , Hugh…”

Tom,

There is a Kalmbach book “Railway Express – An Overview” by V.S. Roseman that has a lot of info on REA.  Available at Amazon and possibly eBay.  A good book.  Here’s a link:

https://www.amazon.com/Model-Railroadings-Railway-Express-Agency/dp/0961269251

And another Kalmbach book “Express, Mail & Merchandise Service” by Jeff Wilson.  Here’s a link:

https://kalmbachhobbystore.com/product/book/12802

Both are very good sources about REA, and the latter about regular LCL and mail service on railroads as well.  I highly recommend both books.

Tony,

Do you know the names of those 7 major express companies (+ the little ones as well) that existed pre-WW1?
Any idea what territories each served?

There is an “Outline of Express History” published by the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society as Bulletin No. 40 in 1936. It is available to read online through JSTOR (sign up to read 6 articles per month for free) or download through paid membership. The article is a general history of express business as opposed to a REA history, and also covers the agreements with Western Union and Pan Am.

I don't know territories for most (at least some were nationwide). There were four really big companies, Adams Express, Wells Fargo, American Express, and Southern Express, along with three railroad-owned companies, Northern Express Co., Great Northern Express, and Western Express. One company remained outside REA in 1929, Southeastern Express, owned by the Southern, and it was bought by REA in 1938. I have read that there were several smaller ones but don't have a list.

Since I am leaving HO, I am disposing of items which I do not need anymore.

I just put a Reboxx ten wheelset test set on eBay fixed price. I also am including a partial pack (8 left of 12) of nominal 1.030" wheelsets (they measure more like 1.027").

Just searching on Reboxx should get you there. If the price is higher than you wish to pay, please become a watcher. If they do not sell and I have several watchers, I will incrementally lower the price until someone is happy.

I hate posting items for sale, but I feel like  someone on the list would be happy to get them.
