Re: PRR container DD1A color

O Fenton Wells

I don’t know much about PRR FCC. What’s the paint recommendation for say 1950 PRR FCC?

Sorry Lester.  FCC does mean Freight Car Color.  I model 1955-57 and was using Floquil Zinc Chromate primer for 1950s FCC.  Since Floquil is unavailable, unless you have a stash, I am now using ACE (ACE hardware rattle spray can) Red oxide primer for FCC applied over a flat black primer.  I have attached a photo of three freight cars all painted using the ACE red oxide primer.  The gondola in the middle is not weathered, the ones on each side have been weathered using washes of artists acrylic paints.

I’m running BLI phase 5’s only until phase 1’s become available, the sooner the better. The CB&Q had 45 NW-2’s, and exactly one was Phase 5.

All-

Another off-topic post that has to be refuted….

The BLI PA in both HO and N specifically had the grills done in etched brass so the Farr-Air grille of the late PA-2 could be modeled.  It was one of the tools that was surrendered by BLI in the MTH deal and I don’t know if the HO Farr-Air version has been released by them.

Maybe we can combine those with the PA-3 (PA-2?) that's never been made by Walthers or anyone else in plastic.

All-

The NW-2 Ph 5 is not a never done before model.   The Broadway Limited NW-2 is a Phase 5.  Also, BLI tooled the larger radiator making it a  SW-7 Ph I and with the tooled small front window cab a SW-7 Ph II.

If we’re adding never been done before models, how about the EMD E-5 in HO. Yes, I know only CB&Q bought it, but it’s such a classic that surely somebody besides Q modelers would buy it.

Lester;

I find Scalecoat a little dark for my tastes. I prefer Modelflex Light Tuscan Oxide Red for a late forties-early fifties Circle Key-era paint job. I do not believe any DD1A containers or flats were repainted in Shadow Keystone P&L, if any were even still extant by that date.

I am about to move a resin Funaro & Camerlengo container Flat Car kit 8120 to the paint shop. The instructions for the car body state Scalecoat PRR Freight Red, a red moving toward maroon, to my eyes when viewing paint chips. I am guessing containers, DD1A, the same color. Is this correct?

Lester,

I either give some containers a different FCC or at least weather some differently than others.  They were moved around and did not always stay in a group.  I’ll let others comment on the “correct” FCC.  Depending up the era that you model, there is will a multitude of opinions.
