A.A. Morrison Railway Supply / International Car
mark_landgraf
I grew up in Buffalo and was aware of their operations in Ebenezer NY. During some recent research on Greenville Steel Car, it became apparent that Morrison used GSC to rebuild various batches of cars that Morrison seemed to acquire via auction, often from the Erie RR.

During a recent business contact to the Ebenezer Car Shop provided some information, no records of past car rebuild efforts on site, and the remaining family members that had lived at the Ohio International Car caboose factory had either died or moved to Florida. Has anyone done a roster or history of Morrison owned/leased rolling stock? Or a production list for International car cabooses? I have a Partial production list from Eric Neubauer, others may assist in filling in the gaps I'm also looking for factory International Car General Arrangement Drawings for Cabooses. I have other International stuff to offer in trade. Mark Landgraf Albany NY

Re: Round roof double door boxcar
leakinmywaders
To put a finer point on the history of the DT&-I 50-ft round roof cars leased to NP, A.A. Morrison acquired 110 of them about 1960, and rebuilt them to NP specifications for lumber service, and leased them to that road as NP 39500-39609. I think the only outward change was a very slightly deeper side sill extension under the door openings. Even wood running boards were retained. For those interested, Matt Herson and I researched the history of all three classes of round roof steel cars leased to NP, and published details in the NPRHA Mainstreeter, Vol. 29, No. 2, Summer 2010.

I forgot to mention that the inspiration for this model came from one of two "Rail Model Journal" reprints did where they compiled several of their freight car articles. I think Richard Hendrickson did the article. Of the now gone magazine I miss RMJ the most!

Nice looking car Bill. It's fun, I think and go back and look at 'Older' models we have built. Fenton

Very glad to see these EJ&E decals. Notice they are not offering the set for the Green & Orange cars.
The EJ&E had very interesting steel cars. In addition to their USRA steel rebuilds, they build 10' 6" IH car with Dreadnaught ends and 8-foot doors, essentially the 1937 improved design with wider doors. Curiously they followed these with lower 10-ft IH cars with 8-foot doors and improved Dreadnaught ends, essentially the 1944 AAR car. Here is my attempt at an EJ&E 10-ft IH boxcar w/improved Dreadnaught Ends using a C&BT kit. The roof was sawed off and I then added styrene on the inside across the door opening to add rigidity. The body lowered by six-inches by sanding on a flat plate and then the roof was re-attached. Look closely and there is a sage in the middle, Ugh. I kept going. The kit door was modified. The bracket grabs are Detail Associates which I now know are too long but the look pretty good. I think I could do a better job 20+ years latter but now I am lobbying Yarmouth to add this car to there Steel car offerings since they are doing such interest steel variations. The decals are Walthers. The orange decals were not opaque so I wrote them and ordered two more sets and layered them on which worked pretty well. When I ordered I included a note about why I needed more and what I planned to do. The two decal sets included a note that said the sender had to do the same thing. Bill Welch

The W&R cars are painted brass imports. Norwest produced the resin kits for these reefers and like you, I have some to build.

Bill Pardie asked: "As with Gene Deimling’s recent post on revisiting older models I find that I am spending a fair amount of time upgrading some of my earlier models. Early on I built models following the manufacturer’s instructions. I did not have much access to anything else. One concern that I have with the earlier Westerfield car above is with the size of the buzz saw herald. Ed Hawkins a while back informed me that most early heralds were 30” in diameter. The one on the car above is less than that." Remind us what era you are modeling? That helps shape the answer. "I recently found the end photo (below) of a car with exactly the same number. It appears to be a builders photo. Does anyone know or have access to the side view of the builders photo?" That won't be helpful unless you are modeling the early 1920s as the original paint and lettering scheme lacks any herald and is markedly different from 1940s and 1950s lettering. Ben Hom

NP WOOD REFER COLOR
WILLIAM PARDIE
I found the W&R flier with Bill McKeown’s comments on the color for NP’s wood refers. Gary Lasko covered all of the points in his recent post. Above are tow of W&R’s offerings of these cars. As I have previously noted for a while my freight car roster was heavily weighted with cars from Pacific Northwest railroads. That was due to the quality of W & R’s offerings. Bill Pardie

this would be the builder’s photo of the side view. Not sure when the buzz saw came into practice but after 1919 when these were built. norm

Re: FW: Ron Sebastian - Des Plaines Hobbies
I can't remember the first time I visited Des Plaines Hobbies. It was probably in the late 1980's or early 90's. In those days, I often had a meeting in Racine, Wisconsin and on my return trip to Naperville, I could visit Iron Horse Hobbies in Kenosha and/or DPH. I remember the smaller store at the north side of the strip mall and that Ron was excited to move to the larger store to the south. I had to get off the Tri-State at Golf Road and wind my way through the forest preserve and downtown Des Plaines to get to the shop. I remember Ron being an acerbic wit, but always extremely friendly and helpful once I got to know him. My sincere condolences to Sue and the family. Thanking Ron for his service to his country and his customers in the hobby, Steve Hile
