Re: Nalco Weed Sprayer and tank cars
Attached are the photos of NALCO cars I have found online (besides the ones you and Steve posted).
Thanks!
From: <main@RealSTMFC.groups.io> on behalf of Steve and Barb Hile <shile@...>
According to a 1966 ORER, Nalco owned 18 such cars numbered 101, 103-105 and 108-121. Here is a shot I found of 120 working on the Rock Island in Peoria.
The tank cars appear to be a mix in both shots including a UTLX car behind 120.
It is not clear when these cars were first used, but the NALCO name apparently arrived circa 1959 shortened from National Aluminite Company, according to Wikipedia.

From: main@RealSTMFC.groups.io [mailto:main@RealSTMFC.groups.io] On Behalf Of Doug Forbes I am looking for help in potentially modeling this Nalco weed sprayer train that was running on the C&EI in 1959 as photographed by J. Parker Lamb. I am looking for ideas on a good HO scale starting box car to modify into the weed sprayer as well as who might have owned the tank cars (I think Nalco owned them from other research I found) what would be good starting models for them as well. I'm looking for any guesses or hunches or commentary you might have.

Bob, If you like that, you'll love what the LoC is doing. Re: ERDX Reefers
Todd Sullivan
Hi Tim,
This is a very interesting photo, but I'm not sure it represents the ERDX cars in my 1952 ORER. The overall length of the 1952 ERDX 9000 series was 42'-6", and all the other MDT owned cars were 41'-6", and the 9000 series had a 2601 cu.ft. capacity while most other MDT cars had capacities from 1900 cu.ft. to around 2000 cu.ft. The 1952 9000 series also is clearly listed as an AAR Mech. Designation RB, and they have a Note F that states, "Cars numbered E.R.D.X. 9000 to 9999 and M.D.T. 9955 and 9962 have sliding doors 5 ft. wide and 7 ft. high." All other MDT owned cars had 4 ft. wide by 6 ft. and a few inches high. Also, there were only 38 cars in the 9000-9999 series and apparently only 2 in the 9955-9962 series. I think the ERDX 9772 in your photo is an earlier car, and it has ice hatches on both end of the roof and its lettering states "Ventilated Refrigerator". I don''t see a built date in photo, but the capacity is clearly 2086 cu.ft. and the I.L. is 33ft. 11 in. which doesn't match anything in my 1952 ORER (MDT, FGEX, etc.). I wish I had my Westerfield 1943 ORER to see if there were other cars of this size as that date, but it's in storage. Curiouser and curioser. Does anyone else have anything to contribute? Help finding photos of 100-599 NRC express refrigerator cars.
I'm looking for better pictures of NRC express refrigerators in 100-599 series. There were 427 cars in service in 1953. I have several poor or distant shots of the cars, but would like to see some of the details better along the side sill and on the ends.
I think there was a set of plans in one of the old Model Railroader Cyclopedia, maybe the 1940 edition. Any help would be appreciated. The BLM and Walthers express reefers appear similar, except for having ladders instead of grab irons. Aaron Gjermundson

Re: Southern Railroad drop bottom gondola question
George Eichelberger
Black was the standard body color for open top cars until the standard was changed to Southern freight car brown in 1959/60. Black cars would have all be stenciled with Roman style lettering until that was changed slightly later, but still about 1960.
The new Tangent hopper correctly shows Roman lettering on a red car as was done until the color change caught up with the lettering. For a bit of trivia, the first ”Big John” covered hoppers were stenciled with Roman lettering. Most of the cars sat in storage while the 100-ton rate case was going through the courts. When Southern won the (SCOTUS) case and the cars were placed in service, their serif style lettering was changed to the new block style. Ike

Re: Southern Railroad drop bottom gondola question
yep - until they weren't any more. kinda depends on WHEN. In 1957=1958 a large number of oxide red hoppers were delivered. https://www.tangentscalemodels.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/SOU-281526-1000.jpg
