Hello Randy,
In your earlier post, you mentioned Dalman One-Level trucks and stated they have never been offered in HO before. A big hole, of many. Will you be offering these trucks? Hoping, Dan Smith

Nice job on this early Westerfield car. I did this car when it first came out but that car has suffered some damage. I have decals for a later period and have obtained another kit. One note. The ladders on this and several other MP cars were wider than normal. Westerfield now has the proper ladders as a separate part. Bull Pardie Sent from my Verizon, Samsung Galaxy smartphone

My go-to color for a basic freight car red has become Vallejo "Rust" - which for a while was sold by Micro-Mark as "Boxcar Red." I'll usually tint it one way or the other with either a crimson red or a earth/flesh tone depending on if I want to lighten and/or darken it.
It's considerably less brown and a much warmer color than the old Floquil/Polly Scale BCR, which always seemed a little bluish/purple to my eye.
Here's a car painted with straight Vallejo Rust prior to a flat coat being applied -

Bill, I respectfully disagree, Santa Fe steel running boards remained unpainted galvanized when applied new. They were only painted to match the roof in a repaint. Had the running boards been wood, you would be correct that they should be Mineral Brown. I agree, The idea that a paint needs to be exactly “Erie Brown” is ridiculous for an in-service and slightly weathered car. Paint fades and weathers differently. Plenty of examples of this can be found even with the more stable paints of today. Just mix whatever paints you have on stock to get close to that color it. You want different shades of paint on cars from the same road, its more prototypical. Corey

Only if it is a wooden roof walk... metal roof walks match the roof color.

And just to add to the discussion, most of the ERIE boxcars I saw during 5+ years of prowling about the E-L Port Jervis Yard were a lot browner than the photo posted. I suspect the slide in the photo was Kodachrome which shifted colors toward red.
Another thought: this only really matters if you are modeling a new or recently repainted car. The Northeast was a dirty place in the 1940s and 1950s with lots of steam locos and coal-fired factories and power plants. Cars darkened pretty quickly in that environment. Todd Sullivan

Or buy a bottle of Tru Color Erie Freight Car Brown, which is matched to color chips and is more brown than the red in the photo.

I am going to be painting an Erie Boxcar in the near future and they have Vallejo and Tamiya paints. Does anyone have a color in either line that would be close to the color of the attached photo? I’ve learned the color name on the label means nothing. Heck Lester B used Vallejo Model Color Red Leather to model PRR FCC and it looks good.

Re: Erie Boxcar red help
Schleigh Mike
Hello Group & Brian! My best choice for the ERIE's FCR was the Floquil FCR for the ATSF. I have never compared it with Vallejo or Tamiya but perhaps that color would provide you a basis to choose. Not to go tangential here but, in my experience, Intermountain never got this right on their ERIE boxcars. Branchline did it better and perhaps is another comparison you might make. Regards --- Mike Schleigh from Grove City, Penna.
