Re: D&H Flat

I did some searching around on the Shapeways site and found a PRR F25 model by "Mad Dog Design" and a different GSC depressed center flat by "Lee123 Minatures and Train Models" that has space on the bottom for weight. The link to the GSC car is here:

Thanks. I could swear that one of E&Ps models was correct for some of, one of? the D&H cars . . .
Nobody else has said anything so maybe not.

There are some prototype advertising but no instructions on handling and mounting the prints. http://www.resincarworks.com/extras/extras_Equipco.htm
This page of tips pops up quickly when searching for “How to clean Shapeways prints.” https://www.shapeways.com/forum/t/best-way-to-clean-frosted-ultra-detail-model-for-painting.29248/
Bill Welch had an interesting post on mounting the Kadee handbrake hardware. Some of this may help when installing the RCW Equipco details. http://blog.resincarworks.com/adapting-kadee-brake-components/

I know the thread is old but I finally ordered the 3D printed Resin Car Works Equipco Brake Wheel and housing and it arrived today. As I am primarily an SP modeler I need a good supply of the brake wheels and housings and I have an IM B-50-23 rebuild project underway after picking up the partially assembled kit of the used shelf at my local hobby shop. I will re-use the chain and rod connecting the housing to the lever.

Yes, here are the ones that are, in my opinion, close to the prototypes we're discussing.
The car body casting -- https://www.shapeways.com/product/J3JHSB42J/general-steel-industries-depressed-center-flatcar?optionId=110745885&li=marketplace The trucks -- https://www.shapeways.com/product/7J9LLN7YW/general-steel-industries-three-axle-trucks?optionId=110758345&li=marketplace On both of those pages, the prototype car is shown. I don't immediately see the other one, but Shapeways' filtering capabilities aren't fabulous. And I don't have it here any more, it went to my other house. I will say that there are at least a few freight cars and parts for our era on the site. I have not built one yet. Ron Merrick

Hi Ron,
Can you be more specific as to the Shapeways vendors for these heavy duty flat cars? Todd Sullivan.

Re: D&H Flat

There is a 3D printed model, for the body casting and the trucks, for a car very similar to this on Shapeways. The car that's closest to this has no obvious way to add much weight, but there is another, less "correct" in terms of the car I'm trying to model, that has a generous open space on the bottom for weight.
I believe the specific prototype for this car was a Frisco, or perhaps the Frisco, depressed center flat. I'm working on modeling an MP one, all of these very similar to the D&H one shown. Ron Merrick

Now are there hints on how to handle the prints and mount the housing. Was there ever a photo blog on installing the parts. The further saga of the project will be on the Plastic Freight Car Builders group and shared to this group.

Tim,
For some images of the Mesta Machine products and processes (including images of that blooming mill stand on PRR 425000 well flat on page 124) check out: https://archive.org/details/plantproductofme00mest/page/124/mode/2up Lots of good inspiration there for HD flatcar loads. Andy L. Wisconsin

I had wrong D&H series. I am kind of glad I did. It led to a good discussion. Side note to Tim and Dave, how much for well car? Francis A. Pehowic, Jr.

Re: D&H Flat
Schuyler I have them also - there are differences in trucks, lower decks, and upper decks for the 125 ton 2 truck, 6 axle (versus 4 truck 8 or 12 axle) cars. It may be possible to "morph" one of them into another prototype by the addition, removal or modification of certain details. I attach the only photo I have of a D&H 2 truck car - note the wood upper deck and very small triangle anchors on the lower deck.

Tony Hear hear! Those are spectacular castings at very reasonable prices. I wish I knew what the heck they were used for! What does a "blooming mill stand" do? Were these things highly unusual (i.e. extremely low production numbers) or were they objects that wore out and needed to be replaced? Tim O'

For the case somebody likes to see freight cars running

Hello friends,
this has been filmed yesterday at an exhibition near Stuttgart, Germany: https://www.facebook.com/plugins/video.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fbernd.schroter.566%2Fvideos%2F749394172252008%2F&show_text=0&width=560 Train is completely brass, engine is CIL with some detail upgrades and all-wheel current pick-up. Runs extremely well. Yes I know - SP&S caboose is bogus with this engine - I will take care of this soon. And yes I remember the discussion about the PRR G24 scrap service gondola and the conclusion that it wouldn't be that good for any train away from certain PRR rails - but very recently I found this seemingly professionally painted or repainted model in Italy - and it was a "steal" so I couldn't resist. The whole train may not be very accurate, of course - but train length was restricted because of short yards, and I have lots of still unpainted and more "generic" cars like PS-1, USRA drop-bottom gondola, USRA box, XM-1 box, etc. which will join the train at a later time. An hour earlier I have had a beautyful NH "State-of-Maine" insulated box car in the train, but unfortunately this hasn't been filmed I believe. All but very few cars with special trucks (like the W&R coal gondola with its clasp brakes) have been converted to the (hopefully correct type of) Tahoe trucks with necessary work on the bolsters. Generally all cars are "reworked" and improved more or less extensively, that means repairs or improvements on solder joints and detail upgrades (at least those in 99% apparent stupid "steps" or s-shaped bents in the brake rods, along with other brake detail corrections). Hope the one or the other of you will enjoy the clip. Regards Johannes modeling the early post-war years up to about 1953

Square weave for hog wire or field fence, diamond for chain link.
