Union Oil 76 paint scheme
Tony Thompson
Years ago, a couple of the HO scale manufacturers of tank cars offered Union Oil cars in a dark blue paint scheme with an orange 76 emblem (the company colors). Several people, including no less than Richard Hendrickson, pronounced this a bogus scheme, with bright colors to attract modelers.
But recently in browsing old issues of _Model Railroader_ from the early 1950s, I found the photo below in an Athearn ad of 1952 (they offered this scheme on a metal tank car model) -- and note the astronomical price. Can anyone supply more information about how widely used this scheme was?

Both CGW series had the "Murphy" radial roof, which is very similar to the Hutchins radial roof except for lacking the indentations in the corners of the seam caps.

I think the schemes were simultaneous. Most of the silver & black cars had butt welded hip roof, most BCR had Radial roof as modeled by the Speedwitch kit.

GA box car colors
Clark Propst
I'm building a Speedwitch Georgia box car...again. I painted the last one in silver and black (Have a son-in-law that's a Raiders fan ; )which I've sold long ago. I'm thinking of doing this one in bcr because I have a Speedwitch Katy car I'm going to do in yellow and am not sure two bright cars are too many? Ted doesn't give dates for the two color schemes. This has probably been hashed over before, but I'm interested now ; )))
Thanks for any guidance on the subject, CW Propst

Looking through their 1923 and 1932 diagram books, all of the CGW's single sheathed boxcars (except for their 1914-built Fowlers) had radial roofs. That's confirmed by the few photos I have of their single sheathed cars. Ray Breyer Elgin, IL

Gentlemen, I was going through RP Cyc No. 18 last night and was surprised to read that CGW 1923 ARA single-sheathed box cars came in at least two varieties. I read that a whole series of cars was delivered with Murphy roofs and 7-8 Murphy ends. However, one of the photos referenced of the series with Murphy roofs seems to show a car with a round roof. Are there any CGW experts on board that can confirm if CGW indeed had a series of cars with 7-8 ends and Murphys roofs? If this is true, a simple roof replacement on the F&C model will yield a nice CGW car at a reasonable prices (not Sunshine prices). lol - yeah, but only if you model 1940 :-) the whole plant was modern enough to take it apart and ship it to China

Really positive experience overall, but I remember it taking a while because this is a small side business and the proprietor is frequently out of country as an airline pilot flying overseas runs.
Just be patient, he will get back to you. I’ve bought from him before and intend to do so again.

Paul, Very nicely done. I did 2 of F&C ACL war emergency gondolas way back when and the decals were thrown out. Microscale does a nice set and Westerfield has several in both the Roman and Gothic that I've used to piece together what is needed. Tom Christensen
